hello all. I have a Ford Explorer base with the simple radio. Is it possible to purchase the ford mytouch sync radio and install it in the base explorer and be fully functional?

thanks!

This is the aftermarket unit. I was wondering if the Original Ford Mytouch can be purchased at a Ford dealer and installed

I am quite sure that it cannot. You can only get the navigation if it is factory installed. There are posts saying it has to do with licensing. Also, I'm not sure if the Base model has an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) which is the 'brains' of the MyFord Touch (MFT). This isn't an item that Ford sells as far as I know. All defective APIM's must be returned by the dealer to Ford when they are replaced. The reason I inquired about the rearview camera is because in the video he hooks up the camera and I was of the belief that the Base model doesn't have one so I was wondering if the vehicle in the video was a Base model or another one that just didn't opt for the MFT package.

Do you think thats the whole package? will it work if placed on the base model explorer?

Just copied you on a conversation with 2 members that I believe are a little more knowledgeable on this type of thing. Hopefully a reply will be forthcoming soon.
I'd hate to say yes, it will work only to have you buy it and find that it doesn't.

If the base model has existing SYNC it is possible but is not plug and play. Some re-wiring has to be done and programming changes made. If the vehicle doesn't have SYNC, it would be a nightmare to attempt to add it.

hello

it does have the microsoft sync capabilities like giving oral commands to the car and bluetooth phone just without the mytouch big screen

If you can handle the re-wiring and addition of some wiring circuits along with the programming you will be fine. Otherwise you would have to farm out some of the work.

Thanks for jumping in here Jason.
