I tried the plastic fuel line tool and it was a pain in the arse. The plastic is just to thin (at least on the one I got) too push the clips back far enough to free the line. Here is what I did to fix the problem. AND it came off in a blink of an eye. Mind you I spent at least an hour before that not understanding why the damn tool didn't work
I also found the 3/8" tool to be too thin (after much anger and frustration). Thanks to your tip, I was able to cut up a highlighter pen cap to thicken the tool. It worked like a charm on my '03 V6!
I took some pictures that clearly show how the 3/8" tool is just too thin to clear the locking ring, but can't figure out how to post them in this thread?

The mission was a success... (after 2+ hours....) Some notes for others doing it.
I tried using the "plastic thingies" to release the line.... no dice....
I also had a metal one of these.... no dice.... (The smallest one on the set was still too big...)
I ended up being able to get the front of it off (towards the engine) with the plastic thinigies but the back one was REALLY not movin'... PB Blaster and all.... So off to the auto parts store...
I ended up finding a set of anodized line release tools...
OTC PN# 6507 4 Pc. Fuel/Oil Line Disconnect Tool Set
Got back from the store, went at it, bam.... done deal....
Short Version: Don't waste your money on the plastic thingies, or the steel multifunction tool... Get the anodized disconnect tool set and get 'er done!
Only rarely will the plastic ring tools I have take a lot of fussing to release a line, I just used em today and they worked just fine for removing the fuel filter.
