Fuel Problem

Hi Guys

My 92 Explorer died on me couple nights ago. I was on my way home about 1am from a fire call. My explorer sputtered I went to fire station. About 4 miles from station the explorer died. I tried to start it back up it just cranked over. I dont hear the fuel pump hum when you turn on the key. I tried yesterday and still didn't hear nothing. I say the pump went south on me. I went and got a new pump today. Do you guys think it's the pump?

If you're not hearing the whine when you turn the key, there are several choices of what could be wrong.

1. Fuel inertia switch tripped.
2. Fuse blew
3. Problem with the wiring
4. Bad fuel pump.

The fact that it sputtered a little before it died suggests #1 and #2 are out.

Sadly it's probably time to drop the fuel tank...

Pump or the relay. Both common problems. The WOT A/C relay is the same and can be installed in it's place. Try it, can't hurt. If that doesn't work then look at the pump.

Under the carpet, against the firewall/trans hump on the passenger side. Been a bunch of years since I had to trip it. I "used to" use a rubber mallet and whack it a few times to shut off the fuel pump if I wanted to stop it from running when I was working on other stuff with the key "on".

I would replace the fuel pump and ECU relay first.
Secondly, I would check the wiring.
The inertial switch can be by passed with a paper clip.
Third, I would check the ECU. The old ones will leak oil from the capacitors. You can do a visual inspection for a leak.
Finally, I would repalsce the fuel pump. Rock Auto (explorer forum sponsor) has Carter pumps (complete assembly) for like $110. My mechanic tells me Carter is the actual OEM fuel pump manufacturer.

I went ahead and changed the fuel pump but it wont start. I don't even get the humming noise when you first turn the key. I checked the fuse box under the hood and the fuse is good. I checked the fuel shut off switch i could not push the reset button. Where is the ECU relay at? If you guys have any other ideas please let me know?

It is time to break out the Volt meter. We need to find out where you are loosing power.

I would first check for 12v on both sides of the inertia switch. Just put the black lead to ground and put the red lead to each side of the inertia switch.

If you have no power on either side the issue is before the switch. Think fuses or relays.

If you have power on both sides of the switch it is the wiring to/at the pump.

If you have it on 1 side of the switch only then its the inertia switch that is bad.

Is the inertial switch the same thing is the fuel shut off switch and if it is what about taking a paper clip to jump it. What color of the wires do I need to jump it. About a week ago I added a remote starter to it. Could that be my problem?

The inertia switch is the fuel shutoff switch. It shuts off the fuel in case of an accident. There are only 2 wires going to it. Take the connector off and jump the 2 wires on the connector using something like a paperclip or short piece of wire.

I wouldn't expect a remote start to cause this but an alarm system that shuts off the fuel could.

Its time to do the tests listed in post #10 in this thread.. otherwise your just guessing.. It can by almost anything.

This is assuming the issue is really Fuel and not something else (like no spark).

I have been reading on this forum about these fuel pump relays. I understand some people heard their fuel pump hum after you turn the key off. Mine also was doing this before it stopped running. I checked the wrong relay. I will check the green relay out tomorrow. But the old pump I took out tonight looked bad and rusty. At least I have a new pump in the explorer.

Swap the WOT relay into the fuel pump relay position. They both reside under the black cover next to the air box under the hood.

Hi Guys

I went out and inspected the ECU and the board looks new. Which one of the other relays is the EEC Relay? Could my ground cable be bad? I have my battery on the charger all evening and if you try to start the explorer the battery drains real fast. I don't know if my cables could cause my problem or not.

I suggest you get a chilton's manual for your truck. Makes it so much easier...
