ive only got 3.73 gears and posi-track.. if i did get lockers in the rear, how would that affect my performance? I'm not into the rock-crawling, but just mudd and sand.. My friend was telling me it would be useless to upgrade to a locker when i already have posi?

I didn't know they made Mountaineers in 2wd. I thought all of them were all wheel drive.
That is why I love being a member. You learn something new everyday:)

I have no problem with 2WD.

Then again, mine doesn't leave the street.;)

I'm one of those people that gets mad when he has to drive down a dirt road because my X will get dirty.

get a limited slip rearend.. go in straight lines.. and go fast! lol thats about all I can think of..

seriously you're right.. aside from basic offroading a 2wd is incapable.. but hey.. you have ground clearance, you could do dry level trails :P thats a ton more than a car can do.. I call car owners "pavement slaves" lol even tho I'm 2wd on street tires I'm confident I could out offroad any car heh, and if I got stuck.. oh well.. you can always try and rock free.

I've only been in the mud once.. and yes.. I got stuck in 2 minutes, but I've been down many a dry trail and had no problem there..

I tell you what tho.. my next truck WILL be 4wd!

haha man....:D

My current X is my first 4x4, but all my other trucks in the past saw plenty of dirt. One thing good about wheeling with 2wd is that you are forced to learn about wheel placement and how to pick a good line.

Im thinkin i might just invest in a new arb air locker for my rear.. is that really worth it? I already got stock limited slip?

But yeah, somtimes you just need 4WD. The worst is having a RWD V8 in the snow! Convert dude.. you won't look back!

No it isn't. 5-0, made for snow!

Actually, I haven't had much of a problem with the last couple of ice storms here in Mississippi, and my Mountaineer is also a 5.0 2wd. I guess that common sense plays a big factor, but I'm usually the one that gets called to either drive someone or to try to pull someone out of a ditch, and some of these people have fwd, awd, and 4wd.

On the other hand, I need 4wd to get to some places that I like to hunt and fish. I might take advantage of a special lease program with Nissan on the new Titan for Tower employees, since my plant makes for the frames for them, while I do my 4wd conversion on my Mountaineer.

I just had one close call when I lived in SLC, UT and worked in Park City. I was on my way to the mountain one morning. It was snowing, cars and semis were littered all over the road. It was uphill into Park City and there was a single line of moving vehicles weaving through all the stuck cars. Anyway, traffic slowed.. I almost came to a complete stop, and I could feel the rear end sliding off the road. Luckily I pulled out of it and cars started moving faster. I would have blocked the only path for East-bound traffic to go through! That would have sucked..

E-locker:p

Convert!

That's what I'm planning to do. As soon as I find out if and when we're moving, I'm going to buy a wrecked 4WD V8 X and drop in the engine and front drivetrain.

Yeah, like others have said, a locker (powertrax), mud terrains, air down and you will be good to go. You will be able to run over any mattress :)

When I got my rear locker it was like night and day over the limited slip.

Not unless you're sitting on a chevy axle. You have traction-lok. A limited slip has no where near the traction of a locker. But if you get a selectable locker you will be open diff on the road(unless you run it on the road which will be noisy and rough on the rear tires) It all comes down to what you need. I like my limited slip and it's all I need. I'm 4x4 tho. ;)

Me too!!! I only drive over puddles or dirt roads when my truck is already really dirty. Other than that, I avoid almost everything that's liquid or contains brown dirt particles. :p

I went in the mud with a buddy of mine last week in my Sport, he has a 93' Nissan light truck. He has 4x4, and all I have is a solid 9 inch Ford rear axle. We were in 3 inches of red clay/mud. I put about 600 pound of concrete bags in the back of my Explorer. I amazingly got through most of the mud without getting stuck. In the mile long track I got stuck 3 times, the first two I rocked out, the 3rd I had to be pulled out. The concrete was 50 pound bags that I had let sit out in the rain, and let sit up. Then you have a convient way of getting a large amout of weight on you back axle. And I don't have tires that are suited for getting in the mud. But I am planning to do a 4x4 conversion, my problem is finding a divorced t-case. I'm not sure where to find one, or what kind I should use, but for mounting I'm fine. I have a brand spanking new Lincoln Arc Welder in my garage, and I will be having fun with that.

You need a locker in the bvack if you want to play in the sand.......

Also an air compressor because the best thing you can do in the soft stuff is to air down low for floatation..

A locker in theback will be night and day of where you can take your truck..........selectable lockers are nice (ARB, etc) but not always necessary in the rear axle........
