I just finished installing my Rubicon Express Hand Throttle. http://www.rubiconexpress.com/ Works great! I think it will work well off-road thats for sure! I was taking pictures half way though the battery in my camera died. So I will get a new battery and finish taking pictures then put them online.

Ryan -
I'd be interested in seeing some photos and your write-up. Checked out the link for the Rubicon Express/Rock Crawler installation and would be interested to know any specific considerations for the Explorer.

BTW, great photos from the Moab pre-run...

Paul, got the new battery tonight for the camera so I will take some pictures tommorow night when the light is still there. I will write the documentation on what all was needed to do it. The pictures do the best description of it though. The only specific instructions would be to ignore most of the ones that come with it as they are for a Jeep. I will get this up before moab if at all possible.

Ryan,

I just installed one in my Explorer. You're right it works really well. I can't wait to try it out on some hills.

I've been practicing taking off with it on level ground and it works excellant.

Looking forward to your installation photos and instructions. I'll post them on the site.

Yeah I sure like the way it works. I think since I got tommorow off I will go find some nice tall hills to test it out on. Its really nice on the cold mornings when you need the truck to warm up a tad quicker. Or when your lazy and don't wanna use the gas peddle in the city. Although they don't recomend that for liability purposes. Dead Link Removed

Ryan -
Maybe I'll order one and bring it to Moab - - I'll keep you supplied in Mountain Dews if you talk me through the process!
See you in a couple weeks.

Paul

Paul, that would work. I will just have to remember to bring the right crimper tool along. I am going to take the film in tommorow to get developed. Its a fairly easy install once you figure out what in the world is going on. I screwed up some on mine but its still works just fine.

Sounds like a plan - - bring the crimper. Anyone who has seen me modulate brake, clutch, and gas would agree that I could use this modification Dead Link Removed.

Well I just got my pictures back. All but a few of the un-important ones turned out looking like crap. Blurry and un-readable. So I guess if you have pictures of your install Rick put them up. If not I will have to wait and see what kind of camera I can use to take thse better.

I can do that, but I bet I did it differently, and not necessarily better.

I first tried to loop around the stock mounting point where the cable attaches to the ball. I didn't have the cable pulled tight enough so I had to cut off the crimp deal. Then I went to a bicycle shop and picked up a little nut and bolt deal, which allows you to pass the cable through and tighten it in place. That worked real well and it allows you to take it apart if needed.

I also ended up drilling through the throttle lever and looping the cable through there.

Oh yeah, another thing you NEVER want to do. I had my cable attached to my shifter in the cab (ground). The other end managed to arc to the positive battery post. I didn't see it touch, but all of a sudden I heard a sizzle and saw that the cable was turning red hot! So I pull the RED HOT cable away with my bare fingers. Needless to say I now have sear marks across my finger tips. It looks like the lines on a bbq steak! I highly doubt anyone else will be as stupid as me, but I thought I would pass this tid bit on for laughs! Dead Link Removed

Rick I hooked mine up the exact same way you did it the first time! Only mine has a tad bit of slack but not enough to worry about. I may change it to the way you did it the second time. That would be a better way to do that. I wonder why they don't include that in the kit. Its hard to crimp, pull tight and hold the crimper thingy all at once. Dead Link Removed

LOL I can just see that happening! I think mine is well away from other wires for that to happen.

Here is my only good picture. Its of the inside. The engine compartment ones turned out to blury.

Rick it looks like you did the same thing I did on the shifter cable! Did you cut off the wrong end of the wire? I know I did, then after I did it and put it together I said opps!

Guys -
That looks simple enough, and there are plenty of bike stores in Moab to pick additional hardware.
I know we're going to Moab to wheel and not wrench, but I'll take any parking lot advice you guys care to offer at the Silver Sage (if I can get the part next week).

P.S. Any chance the cable can routed under the transmission hump (or carpet) to the bottom of the shift boot (just to give it a cleaner, unexposed look)?

Paul

You could definately route the cable under the carpet. It's just a little more work.

Hey Ryan, did the threaded adjuster fit in that hole without drilling or did it need to be enlarged. It's only been a few days and I can't remember already. I think I did need to expand it a little. If that's the case someone (me?) will need to bring a cordless drill.

Oh yeah I had to drill a new hole completly. Where you have yours gets in the way of the cruise control. So yeah bringing a drill would be smart. I can do that also if needed.

hey guys the handle throttle looks like a neat idea... if your going to need a drill in Moab don't worry about bringing one I always have one in my box in the back with two fully charged batteries and plenty of drill bits (though my drill bits only go so large so if you need some big drill bits you'll have to bring your own)... just so you don't have to pack as much stuff...

DREDGING UP AN OLD POST :D

Tom FAKRWEE and I are ready to do this. I found some nice levers at the bike shop. Rick and Ryan, could yoo post new pics? The old ones don't work anymore. I'd like to see a closeup of how you hooked the cable to the throttle, including the "little nut and bolt deal" Rick used.

Thanks!

Well Bill, I have my pics of mine right here. I just ran the cable down the shifter, up along the firewall, straight to the throttle body linkage. I wrapped the cable around the little red thing at the end of the throttle cable. Very easy to do and mine works in 300-400 RPM per click on the lever. Heres my only pic.....

Thanks Derrick, I saw that same pic in another thread when I did a search.
What I really need to see is the OTHER end of the cable, under the hood.
Think you could take a pic for me?
