Alright, so my 5.0 needs an oil pan gasket and possibly a rear main seal :thumbdwn:. The engine will be removed in order to take care of both of them. I'll be replacing the Oil Pump while I'm at it. (My Mechanic, Not Me)

Is there anything specific I should note for the process? Are there any other things I should take care of or at least get a good look at while the engine is out?

Thanks in advance.

you don't say how many miles. At a minimum, I would do the valve stem seals. May want to do valves as well.

To be honest it would be a good time to honestly just do a rebuild. It wouldn't cost too much more for the rod, main bearings, and rings. I had leaks the same spots as you and now I got ported heads, Scorpion rockers, and a custom cam lol. But in reality if it's already out and on a stand it wouldn't take much extra effort to do a rebuild.

I wouldn't call that a rebuild, more like a refresh or freshening it.

But I agree that that is all I would probably do to it depending what I see when I open up the motor.

to me the ugliest thing on pulling the 5L out believe it or not is that stupid bolt for your trans dip stick! those can be a PITA!
other then what your doing, i would replace your water pump. sometimes (most times) the bolts freeze into the timing chain cover and snap when you remove them. its not that fun doing them on the stand, i can see it being horrible doing them in the truck.

Might as well take care of the timing chain slack, and timing cover gasket-bolts at this time also.

Get a rebuild engine, it's cheaper. I did change the oil pump too, strainer, gasket... to find out that the camshaft end is worn out too. In hind sight, I would be happier if I put in another engine...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm currently at 158k on the odometer.

How much could I expect to pay for something like the 'engine refresh' mentioned above with rod, main bearings, rings?

What about valves or valve stem covers?

if shes running fine leave her alone, at 158k this is nothing. She can go 300k+ with proper love.

I kind of agree. If is just the oil leak, live with it!
Add a bottle of BlueDevil "Oil Stop Leak" in oil, see if it helps with the leaks. It did slowed down mine (like 80-90% of it).

If you do pull the engine, replace water pump and timing chain cover and front seal. The TC gasket is a know weak point at top of engine on each side. Good luck.
