Ok I have a 4L, 1993 limited explorer, 4x4 ...... heres the problem as it happened....

Start the truck let it warm up for about 10 minutes..... start driving it, get about 2 miles and it dies........ starts back up.....( there was no hesitation at all too the motor when die, just cut off ) Drive another 3 miles and it dies again and will not start at all so I called the local towing company said they would be there in 30 minutes... so I waited till then rying too start it on and off for 10 minutes then just sat and wait when they got there the guy told me too turn it over too have a listen and the damn things started!!!!

So I drive too the gas station and fill the tank thinking my gauge was messed or somethign I dunno... it started up fine there I drove it anoter 4 miles and it DIED!!!!! UGH.... so I let it sit for about 10 minutes and it started back up again and dorve it back home....9 miles or so with no problems.... and thats were it sits..

Now the Fuel Pump, Fuel Regulator, sprak plug wires, spark plugs almost evertyhing on the motor was replaced with in the last 4 months due too other problems I have had....

This problem sounds Like a Fuel Issue....... but maybe the relay? I really dont wanna drop the tank again......... seems like only when it gets warm it DIES and wont start till it cools alil..?

Any one with the same issue? HELP PLEASE!

What about the fuel filter? How long has it been since being replaced? That could be the issue, but it wouldn't hurt to clean your MAS and IAC while your're at it.

Sounds to me like the classic fuel pump relay and or fuse connection is bad, next time it happens you need to turn the key to on and listen for the fuel pup so whine, if it doesnt, there is your problem.
I cannot tell you how many Explorer's I have seen do this, the fuse for the fuel pump is a tiny 20 amp yellow sucker in that black box under your hood and the relay is labeled fuel pup relay. Replace the pump, pull the fuse out and look at it, clean it up and stick it back in there, also check the connections for the relay and the fuse, the little wires that connect to both of them clip into place inside that box and they get loose. I got $10 says this is your problem...

Also get under there and check the wiring harness going to the fuel pump, you dont have to drop the tank to feel it, make sure its tight. 90% of the time something like this happnes after you have the fuel system worked on.

When one of my work Xs started doing this, I just swapped the Fump Pump Relay with the A/C WOT relay, and it hasn't been a problem since.

Of course, the truck probably doesn't turn the ac off at wot anymore, but that is just a minor concern. :D

I changed the Fuel Filter, Fuel Pump and fuel regulator all at the same time which was prolly about 2.5 months ago........ just before that I cleaned the IAC Valve and the Mass air meter.....

I have been having a hell of a time with this thing over the last 4-5 months... had to rebuild the altenator, change thermostat, plugs wires, Clean sensors, Fuel regulator, fuel pump, fuel filter, new tps.................

I will Go pick up acouple Relays and some fuse's friday aswell I willpick up some Contact cleaner and some light sand paper for the connections and try all that out on saturday... hopfully that is the problem

Please if anyone else thinks of something else, POST IT HERE

Thanx for all the help!

I don't know about the sensors in a 1993 explorer, but if there is a CKP (crankshaft position sensor), then make sure your CKP-connector is ok. A bad connection may cause the problems you described (when it heats, the connection is lost and the engine stops because no spark because it doesn't know when to spark because of the lost sensor-signal - I had a similar problem with mine).

how r the guages reading? is the temp okay? before dying, does it sputter/hesitate a bit or just flat out dies?

Temp is fine, battery gauge is fine....... it just dies..... no hesitation at all... no sputter no nothing just Cuts off......

as for teh crank shaft positioning sensor I will check too see if it has one..... where abouts are the located?

its right in front of the crank (ahah) behind the pulley and off the the left side i believe - i think its the only wired thing directly in front of the crank.

When it happens did you check for spark. Sounds like module or stator.

No I did not Check for Spark........

When it dies and I try and start it.. it runs for a split second and dies whihc I think is just gas that is left over in the motor......

The Module would be with in the coil pack itself right?

when it does it pull plug wire and check spark if it has spark put wire back on get a rag a look on fuel rail for test port put rag under to catch gas cycle key and push in valve with something and see if fuel is there

I've been thinking the coil pack all along. Usually if a coil fails , it is when it's hot. Could very well be the computer or the crank position sensor. I picked a used coil pack up at the wreckers for around 50 bucks once, solved the problem. Easy to change. Good luck.

FYI every time I go to the junk yard (often) I grab as many ford relays and fuses as I can out of the power distribution boxes, I think I have about 20 relays and countless fuses, no charge.

As 410 stated, if/when it happens again, when you go to restart, pause with the key in the "on" position. Listen for the Fuel Pump whine. If you don't hear it, then you've narrowed your problem to the relay, bad wiring, or malfunctioning pump (last resort, since you did just replace it)

diag it right ecc test, spark, fuel, then fix it one of these will bring you to a fix.
