Hello !!

I have been on this forum for several years.
I have a ford explorer 99 V8
Before posting this post, I naturally looked on the forum but I couldn't find an answer to my questions..

3 weeks ago, I saw I was losing coolant but no leaks...
Then 3 days after the temperature needle no longer moved. She was down there without moving.

I changed the calorstat/thermostat and the temperature sensor (the brown on the picture).
Today I no longer lose coolant but the needle still does not work.

I have many questions :

- I can't do a needle test. How to do ?

- I saw on the forum that there were 2 temperature probes. is it true ? I tokk a picture of another sensor (see att files) : what is this ?

Thanks for answer and sorry for my english

Two temp sensors. One for gauge, one for ecm. Ecm temp sensor has two wires, for gauge has one wire. For temp sensor to work it must be touching/submerged in coolant.

First, check ALL fuses. Several protect the instrument cluster, so check all.

Post above is also wise. Raise front of vehicle so radiator cap is higher than heater core inlet tubes on the firewall. Run till warm, allow to cool and check , fill radiator level by removing the cap. Then ,also fill reservoir.

Thanks for quick answer. Your are nice. But, where is located the first ? The second?

Do i purge the coolant before ?

Raising the front will help purge air out of the cooling system.

The fuses are in the fuse panel on the end of the dash, inside door jamb

Hello,

i have test the gauge on the ground, it's ok.
I changed the both sensor/sender. I made the purge coolant. I changed fuses.

And nothing change with my temperature gauge which do not move...

Any idea ?
Thanks.

Bad sensor, wrong sensor, or issue with gauge itself.

Could be a bad connection at engine harness connector

The brown sensor, with only one wire (red/white) is the sensor for the dash gauge
We call this the CTS coolant temp sensor

The grey one, with two wires, is the coolant sensor for the engines computer. We call this the ECT, engine coolant temp

Did the gauge work before?
Do you still have your old sensor? (The one you took out)

There are two sensors for a 5.0 explorer, meaning they changed the dash cluster around 1998 so it is possible you simply were sold the wrong sensor
I would suggest an ohm test if the sensor you removed and the one you were sold
Compare Results

Hello,

one month later. Same problem !
The gauge is ok when i grounded it but do not move when i start the car.

1) Even If i had the wrong sensor, don't you think the gauge would be at least on the "C" whereas today it is below the C, at the bottom of the dial ?

2) Could you explain how ti test correctly a sensor ? Which measurements (ohm) am I supposed to have ?

Thanks for help

Before i would disassemble the cluster, measure the ohm of that temp sending unit regarding to the video.
The temp gauge is a single unit and maybe ok, or the cluster board is bad.
And yes everything is possible with these electronical gremlins.

Thank you for your help.
But I don't understand one thing: what is the link between the loss of coolant (which I solved) and the needle which no longer moves at the same time! Or is it a coincidence?

Possibly rtv sealant got into water passage to coolant temperature sensor, interfering with coolant contact
Possible bad new sender
Wiring connection disturbed during repair.

Have you checked and tightened the large electrical connectors on the firewall?

Are you waiting long enough with engine running to warm up , to see the gauge move? Mine takes forever on a cold day.

Temperature gauge. Same probleme...See the picture : same thing the morning when the car is cold, after driving, during driving,
Nothing change. It's make me crazy.

If this helps,
I ignore that thing and use a plug in scangauge ii to monitor coolant temp to the actual degree.

While my scangauge displayed 226 coolant temp one hot day at 80 mph on the interstate 70, the idiot gauge was still way under the hot line, maybe 5/8 of the scale . Fyi

Hello,

i have to verify but i think i find the problem : the ground of my car.
The sensor/sender is correct. But there is no ground connecting between the sendor/sensor and the car..
I think all the ground of the car is bad..

Is it possible ?
How to solve it ?

Thanks a lot !!
