HELP!!! URGENT!!! PLEASE READ!!!

Yes I use Mobil One synthetic ATF.

Watter Wetter works great if you have heat problems, I didnt notice much change on my current setup. ON my old 2.9L it dropped my op temp by about 10 degrees.

Your thinking is correct, check the spark plugs. However you are not looking for a "bad" or "destroyed" plug. What you are looking for is a leak in your lower intake manifold. The lower intake manifold bolts come loose and the gasket leaks, causing the engine to run like crap! You need to look specifically at your #5 plug for any mis-coloration, anything other then a nice tan is bad. White = lean, black = trouble. Most Haynes manuals will have spark plug defenitions in the back.

The reason this could be causing your OD to act funny is because it can cause a major LOSS of vacuum. The OD like stated above is controlled by the computer but it also relies on the vacuum modulator on the side of the tranny, this is the vacuum line that comes up the back ofyour 4.0, is held in place by a bolt on the upper intake, and goes to the vacuum tree on the back of the intake. So if you are having rough running engine problems and shifting problems this is the best place to start.

You can fix the lower intake bolts yourself, a temporary fix is to re-torque them down in sequence, the real fix is to actually remove the upper intake, valve covers, lower intake, and replace all the gaskets. I tightened mine down about 6 months ago, took 15 minutes, I wasnt having any problems but when I checked they sure were loose, barely finger tight. they are still tight today and I plan to build a new engine soon so I dont need to replace the gaskets.

In mycase, My #5 plug was completly destroyed. And 410fortune is correct about the gasket. It is not a difficult procedure, and defanitly worth it. Ask whomever is doing the plugs right now, to show you the old plugs. If they are in bad shape, he can show you, and explain what could be causing it.

Im sorry i was talking about a throttle body in my last post... lol
TB=throttle body

Aldive, your post about the acanner makes sense. The scanner is obviously checking the tempature at the computers coolant tempature sensor. My gauge is getting it's reading from a sensor installed in the old electric gauges sensor port, just above the thermostat in the lower intake. So knowing that we are both reading the coolant temp in two different locations could be part of it.
Also is your truck a stick or auto?

When your scanner says 194 I'd be curious to know what your N O R M A L gauge reads. My factory gauge is not hooked up so I can only go by my Autometer........

Though I have not really checked I believe the gauge and the computer use two different sensors on the 4.0L for coolant temp, right? My old 2.9L did and most engines I see now days does.......I also assume that because if I run the KOER and KOEO test I get an all cleaar code, meaning the EEC passed the coolant temp sensor test........or I would get a code......

My temp sensor is located right by the thermostaty housing.

I have an auto tranny.

The fake gauge reads the same always, right in the middle.

I am not aware of two sensors.

interesting. What thermostat are you using?
195 right?

I wonder which is more acurate? the Autometer guage I have or the EEC telling your scanner what the sensor is reading......

You have any other mods on your truck? You have the towing package? You run synthetics?

got 6 new spark plugs
i also got the old spark plugs, boy the 3 on the passenger side were bad , i know because they were different than the ones on the drivers side.
1 of the passenger side plugs was really really really bad, i bet those were orginal, they were motorcraft ones.

anyways i tried it on the highway in overdrive and it shifted fine, also it seemed to start alot better.

my dad is going to help me tighten the lower intake bolts tomorrow.

i'll keep you guys updated on how its running, hopefully that was all the problem was

speical thanks to everyone that helped out.....your help is what makes this board so great!!!!

thanks again

I have to very much second that!!! Just take a look at what has happened on this thread in less than 12 hours. Can you imagine the time and money that would have been invested just in diagnosing this problem at a shop or the dealer? Could you imagine what it would have cost if a shop had just "shotgunned" the parts to fix an vehicle with these symptons?

Just Another Example Of How Incredible This Site Is!!!

Yes the 195 F thermostat.

I really don't know this answer.

I run synthetics all around.

I hear the newer explorers that didn't use the a4ld the 95 and up explorers it doesn't really matter if you keep it in over drive or not? So that's what I heard another posting on the board.

Oh it definitely matters at speeds above 40 mph. Overdrive keeps your gas consumption down at highway speeds.

glad to hear everything was ok.

Just an update after driving it more last night,
the truck runs like a whole new truck now!

shifts wonderfully into overdrive.
smooth idel
throaty sound from the exhaust is back.
accelerates much better, i mean i thought this truck was a turtle before now it isn't half bad, thats probably cuz for a while i was probably running on about 5 and 1/2 cylinders.

anyways i am pretty sure my problems are gone.
but i am going to look into checking the lower intake bolts and retorque them just in case.

thanks again guys

ryan

does anyone know a tranny shop in the metro-detroit area that really knows what they are doing with an A4LD, 91' edition? I have the ever popular quitting overdrive problem and I need it rebuilt

great thread by the way, very informative

EliteConcept- Glad to see that everything is running fine now!! Isnt this board great!?

Okay here me go time for me to B&*ch about my POS EXplorer that is pissing me off to no end right now.

Here it goes:

The 94 XLT 4X$ auto with 90K on it drives fine until it gets ready to shift out of the first gear into the second. Basically, I can force shift at 5K RPMs but definately don't want to be doing that.

Tranny fluid is full, smells fine, and Reverse, Nuetral, 1, 2 work okay. Its when I am acclerating in OD that there seems to be a lag in the shift.

NO BURN SMELL ANYWHERE.

The check engine light did pop on for a few secs when driving home. Of course this has got to happen in 98 degree weather in NY. Temp gauge reads fine by the way.

Timing? Tune up? last tune up was at 60K.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

DAN
