HELP!!!!!Wipers only work in high!!!

On a 96, start with the basics: If it runs at all, we know that the run relay works, and fuse # 16 (30A) in the interior panel is good. If it only runs in high, the wiper hi/low relay is stuck, or the white wire between the high/low relay and the wiper motor is open, or the GY/LB wire that triggers the hi/low relay via the GEM grounding it (position #2 on the relay) has shorted itself to ground. The easiest way to check this would be to unplug the motor and check the connector for power: you should have power at the White wire in low, and the DB/O wire in high. Then, yank the relay and see if the slot where the GY.LB wire connects to it is grounded.

It's not likely the MFS because the interval and continuous low and high all share the same set of contacts in the switch. The only difference in modes is the resistance through the contacts and, therefore, the voltage seen by the GEM.

Explorer Wipers not working

Well here goes. First time and you all helped me on this one. Well it started a year ago when my intermitent wipers quit working. Hi and low worked so I didn't bother with it. Well yesterday coming home from work in the rain of course, they quit altogether with the wipers in the middle of the window. I searched and found this thread with you guys (and Gals). From the writing going on I thought for sure it would be my turn signal pendant with all the goodies. Well someone mentioned the relay but doubted it could be that but at $13.00 at Schucks it was the cheapest and easiest to try. I coulded find out which one it was so I came home and fould that the first three (towards the front of the rig) were all the same and one was the wiper. So I turned on the ignition and started swapping them around. Well sure enough when a good one was inserted the wipers started. I put the bad one in and they stopped!!! So if you don't know which one it is, it is the front drivers side relay. Replaced it and all is good in the world. For now at least. Thanks for your help and I hope this helps someone else. Happy Off Roadin, Rob

front wipers

i have this problem with my 96 explorer. i have done everything!!! I put in a new wiper motor, bought new relays and checked all the fuses!!! I was told that it is rare for the MFS to mal###tion, is this true???

From what i have read on this forum is that that mutifunction switch is prone to go out. I think mine might be getting bad. I once lost my turn signals for 10 minutes, and my intermittent wipers work but at varied speeds. I'll turn them on for a drizzle where I only need them like once every 15 seconds and it will work correctly then all of a sudden they start going like every 2 seconds etc.

No it's not true. It's a fairly common thing for the multifunction switches to go bad in the 2nd gen Explorers.

Wipers work in high only

Hey
Got a 97 Exploder sport and wipers started quitting out on me now only have high ??? control arm or motor???
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thankyou!

Same deal in my 97 Sport. The power distribution box in mine is different than the diagrams I've seen for other 2nd gens. The relays for the wipers are the rectangular ones in the front of the box, they are part # F57B-14B192-AA.

relay fuse

Hey

Got a 97 Exploder sport and wipers started quitting out on me now only have high  ??? control arm or motor???

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thankyou! :D[/QUOTE

I got a 2003 ford explorer trac I had the same problem put new switch on didn't help, so I started checking the fuses there are two relay fuses under the hood in the fuse box. they are the black ones bigger than the usually fuse. it costed me about 35.00 to replace them. hope this help you. I think my number in the fuse box was 44 and 45

Check the wiper relays--there are two.
Located in the power distribution box, under the hood.

I have an 04 Expedition Eddie Bauer and is having the same problem. Are my relays located under the hood.
