How do I know which is the feeder line and the return line?

I found the two hard lines (silver) and the rubber lines that run off them. One was hotter than the other but not all that much warmer. This warmer line runs into the bottom of the little radiator that is in front of the normal (coolant) radiator.

IS THIS CORRECT? The bottom line is the feeder line?
 As I am lacking a Haynes or Chiltons I am making (somewhat) educated guesses here...(Buying one is not an option at the monment)

Do I remove the line feeding into the bottom of the little radiator and run it to the 'IN' of the filter and then run the Supplied line (came with kit) back to the 'IN' of the radiator?

Also I can't seem to get the grille off. I took the screws out of the top and the factory press in pins and it seems to be stuck somewhere around the bottom area. I may not need to remove the grille to install the filter lines but I think that it would be much easier. Did you guys remove the grille??

I also had read another thread in this forum that said we need to have special filters NOT OIL filters to prevent the drop of PSI in the lines after the filter. Is this TRUE?

I woiuld hate to F this one up.. Any advice is greatly appreciated..

Line to the cooler generally comes from the front of the trans. Return line is generally further to the rear.

Are you talking about the B&M aux. spinon Filter?

Heido Ho Everybody

Okay. I figured it out. I disconnected both lines feeding into the tranny cooler and placed plastic bags over both ends and then disconnected my spark plug wires and turned it over a few times and sure enough one of the bags had some fluid in it. This is the Lower line feeding into the cooler. Then I pondered the mounting position for a while and decided to place it just behind the bumper and in front of the wheel well on the drivers side.

To answer KWFH, this is the Perma Cool Remote Transmission Filter Kit from Summit Racing..30 bones er so...

Apparently on the 95 the line from the tranny (solid line) leads directly to a rubber line then into the tranny cooler then it leavs and goes into the radiator.

As far as I know I did everything correct. No leaks and the tranny still works. Thank God... I drove it home from Denver to the Springs and all is well.

I think that it is time for a fluid change though I have never done this before.

What do you suggest for a 95 Auto 4X4 w/ 70K...I am not sure if there is synthetic in there now or if I should switch to synthetic...My buddy thinks that the synthetic fluid has a bluish tint to it and mine is definately RED. I am pretty new at working on cars, though if ya got a problem with your Mtn. Bike I can tackle that...

Thanks for the SUPORT!! :D

He is talking about the B&M Trick Shift fluid. It has a blue color and we run it before but don't waste your money on it. It is very expensive and we couldn't tell now difference.

I definatly recommend synthetic fluid in the transmission. I use Mobile 1 and its definately RED. Different brands may ise different color dyes in their fluid.

Do you have any pics of your install?

No pics Avail Yet..But planning on it

I dont have any as of yet. I have to wait for the snow to thaw and then I will clean er up and take some didgies. I hope to have them within the week. I will be sure to let ya know Aldive

What filter did you use with your install?

Thanks....

Filter??

I have no idea. It came with a white filter with no lable. I would think that Perma Cool makes a filter then that would be it. I plan on changing it soon though as I have to add more fluid and I am not sure if there is synthetic in there. Can you mix synthetic and regular or will that cause problems??

I think that I will have the tranny drained and change the fluid and filter at the same time...

To answer your question...

I think that it is a standard spin on oil filter. It is fairly large...

Just so you guys know. I have a Fram PH8A on my trans cooler. That filter fits and has worked great.

You can safely mix the different types of fluids but you loose some of the good provided by the synthetic.

I highly recommend a complete fluid chang, not just drop the pan type.

I had Jiffy Lube do mine; I need not the hassell of doing this myself. They have a machine. i forget the cost.

Good luck....

Tranny Flush...

I got it with about 66K and the previous owner said that he and his wife had just had a power flush at 60k...

This sounds expensive and I am not sure that it needs it again, after only 10k miles. I have 70 now. I have never done the tranny pan drop but it sounds like a total mess...

Can you take the fluid in to Juffy and have them do it for you with your parts and fluid?

Today I think that I will add some fluid as it was almost too full before I did the install and now it is just past the lowest hole on the dipstick. I will do a bit of research and make the addition.

How much would you say a tranny fluid change (at Jiffy) with Mobile 1 would go for??

Thanks a lot..

Above the lowest hole. I stand corrected by myself...

Yes, you can take your fluid and filters to a Jiffy Lube and have them use them.

The only way to get a complete change is to removea all of the fluid and not just what comes out when the pan is droped.

Give a Jiffy Lube a call and ask them what they charge using your fluid and filter.

Let us know.....

Post Jiffy Lube Call...

Well the guys at Jiffy Lube said No Dice. They won't use Mobile 1 as they have to do the full tranny Flush and use thier tanks that are pressurized.
The cost $79.99. No thanks...

I think that a lot of shops are closed today I cant get a quote from anyone. Argh..

Well I called AAJAX transmissions here in Colo. Springs and they seem a bit s-l-o-w. They said they can drain it (no flush) and replace the fluid w/ Mobile 1 for anywhere from $70-80. Which is a bit high for me at the moment... Does about $4 a quart sound fair?

I dont know what to do. I would like to have a tranny flush and do full synth. just so I know exactly is in there.

I've had Fords for a long time, never heard about all theese tranny problems till I found this site.Just wondering if the aux filters would Help over the long term? Has anybody ran them for long term? Good Luck!

That Jiffy Lube is either dumb as a stone or lazy. I have had a local Jiffy Lube do mine with mMobile 1 ATF that I provided.

I wish I could remember what it cost. It was well worth it in my opinion.

Follow-Up .....

Well I had to switch to a Stubby Buddy. (tight fit filter) As where I thought that a hand width was enough clearance from the crown of the filter to the tire was enough, it was not. I saw some very nominal rubbing on the filter where the paint was rubbed off.
But I figured that better safe than sorry so I fitted the Stubby Fram filter in there and it works just fine. I don't think that there is any difference in flow rates. I hope!

No major change in shifting other than they may be a bit firmer although it could be the placebo effect as well.

Well I called some transmissoin shops and found one that knew thier Sh*t pretty well. He siad that the Jiffy 'power flush' is the worst thing you can do to a tranny. It breaks stuff and ruins the tolerances in the trans.
He ripped on them saying the only reason they decided to ONLY offer the flush was because they couldn't even get the pan drop right. So they had no other option. I believe him as the shop near my work has at least 3 Einsteins working there.

Using synthetics he said is a waste of money if you are going to do a drop pan and change the fluid every 10k miles. The synth. just lasts longer. and costs a bunch more. Also there is no danger moving from synth to dino as I have heard (not true) that it causes leaks.

He suggested a pan drop and using Mercon III. This is much more attractive to me as I like to keep things simple. I am still waiting to get the pics of the installation until the snow thaws. Sorry.

I would take anything a “business” says when “ripping” another business with a huge grain of salt. That is simply a BAD business practice. Sounds to me like he cannot compete with them, hence the put down.

By the way, Jiffy Lube does indeed offer the pan drop filter change for auto trannys.

Further, I have had the full change from Jiffy Lube in my Explorer 2 times; results – no problems at all. Also I have had it done on 4 other cars/trucks in the past with excellent results.

Using synthetic fluids not only allowes smoother tranny shifts, it also improved the life of the tranny and definitely increases the gas mileage.
