'95 limited has 138,000 miles. we bought it 2 months ago.was very well taken care of. interior and body-mint condition.12 days after we bought it-replaced automatic transmission;now a/c compressor. got a good price on "THE EXPLORER"(it's name);our mechanic says we're still a couple thousand ahead.

2000 XLS V6 OHV 117,000 miles

- ball joints (lower)
- brakes (rotors, pads & e-brake shoes)
- filters (fuel, air & oil)
- leaf springs (I broke the left side)
- plugs & wires
- serp belt
- tires
- wiper motor
- lots & lots of fluids

'97 XLT 85,000
Non standard replaced parts:
-camshaft chain tensioner @83000 (warrenty recall)
-thermostat x2. The first one disintigrated @60000. The second one due to paranoia.
- O2 sensors x2. Under 20,000 (warrenty)
- Battery x2. I replace this every 3 years. Don't tempt fate!

Standard stuff replaced.
- Fuel filter every 30K
-Trans fluid every 30K
-radiator coolant flush - twice a year. Started this after the first thermostat disintigrated.
-brake pads. As needed, but they tend to last about 40-50K. Bleed the brake lines while you got everything accessible.
-Tires. x2. About 50K miles each
-Oil and filter. Every 4-5K. Mobile-1 synthetic
-Plugs and wire set. 70K.
-Front wheel bearings. 80K.

Thats all for now.

2000 xlt, 76,000 miles, drives and looks new

Michelins, after driving on my Firestone's for almost 40,000 miles! Free, I might add

thermostat-the plunger broke and was just laying in the housing

ball joints-under warranty...now I grease those puppies, I don't care if they are sealed! I use a needle adapter on my grease gun. Will replace with new ball joints with fittings next time. Ford engineers sure are stupid, aren't they?

Transmission service (Automatic)-man what difference that made! Shifts like new again.

Front disc pads (2x), turned rotor (1x) all under warranty-After the warranty expired, I finally pulled 'em myself and they still had lots of pad left, even though last time in the dealer they said were worn and needed replaced. What a bunch 'o scammers those guys. Anything to get that bill up over 400 bucks...

Front rotors-Now I have a spare set to go and get turned next time I do brakes. Should be a 30 minute job now.

Serpentine belt-that was fun figuring out how to get it back on...guess I'm a slow learner...kept putting it on the wrong way but it was still cheaper than takin' it to the dealer

Driver's side courtesy light-bulb loose, easy fix

Throttle body cleaned-accelerator pedal was sticking at about 60,000 miles. Lot's of crap around throttle plate causing the sticking. Found this one on my own.

Throttle cable mod-My own version. Drilled a small hole in the stop behind accelerator pedal and inserted a small machine screw with lock nuts in front and behind, to allow adjustment. Set up pedal to remove nearly all the cable slack. Man was the pedal irritating before this mod. It would flop around with an inch or so of play. Another stupid engineering feat by those damn Ford guys. They build a helluva truck, then put in something really stupid just to irritate the hell out of us! Way to go...

Oh, almost forgot, fluids and filters "about" every 3000 miles. Air filter when it looked like it needed it. Fuel filter when it was really a dirty throttle body/plate.

Good question, I've been trying to decide if I should replace my Explorer or spend the $$ to rebuild it.

I have a 1991 Explorer XLT purchased new in 1990. It has 365,000 kms or I would guess just around 200,000 miles.

Only items I have replaced are,
tires - on third set and averaging 110,000 per set
clutch-currently on second, original replaced at 210,000 kms
front hubs-replaced with Warn Manual locking at 250,000 kms as automatics would lock unexpectedly
front wheel bearings-replaced at this time
main driveshaft ujoints also replaced at this time, only 1 needed but replaced both
starter motor-replaced original at 300,000 kms
parking brake cable-replaced at 300,000 kms as it was rusted solid. Still stiff.
rivet for power door lock mech snapped at 290,000 km. Re riveted
battery-on second but needs replacement.

Things that need to be fixed.
Paint is shot, though it is original and only bad on hood and roof
bad rust holes at seam below rear passenger doors both sides
Top end of motor is very noisey from around 300,000 km point
New intermittant rattling sound from engine unknown cause
sudden backfiring and loss of power under power
anitfreeze loss, about 1/2 pint every tank of gas possibly seeping from around water pump.
Stereo is intermittant, plug on rear is loose. Fixed once but did something dumb when replacing it and bent locking tabs on side so now radio extraction tool will not

I'm wondering whether to replace the motor, and rad (rad is original) with rebuilds. In it's present state I would guess it's trade in value is nil so wonder if I should put several $$$ into it to keep it on the road for another 5-6 years.

But wonder if I am making a mistake as I'm sure there are other items that will be ready to go. Mainly concerned about other possible rust areas, rest of body is actually good including fenders. Main problem area seems to be common on all the Explorers I have seen up here in Canada, salt is a real killer here.

I suppose if trade in is nil and rebuild is uneconomical would parting it out be a better idea instead of a trip to the scrap yard as it is fairly well loaded.

Eg, articulated sport seats (good condition), factory prem snd with amp/subwoofer, fact sunroof, 5sp manual trans etc.

Kevin
how did u fix the power loss?

Hello ... 1994 2x4 XLT 178,000 original owner
Thermostat
Resealing radiator
Auto-transmission shift modulator (3)
Rotors - front
Universal joints
Radius arm bushings (2) urethane now
Serpentine belt tensioner
Plug wires & plugs (2)Bilstein HD shocks
AirConditioner high-side hose
Fuel pump relay
Its been really dependable overall.
I'll drive it till 250,000 then try again!

I have a 98 Sport 4x4 with Manual Tranny and 100,600 miles

I have owned it since 2002 and it had 56,000 miles on it

The only problem so far is the dreaded Dual Media stereo LCD blackout.

'95 with 183k owned since 51k in 1997.
Theres been minor problems but mainly the tranny at 145k. Ball joints at 179k. Now Im having problems with some rust starting in various places.

I can post here now... I have a little over 100k on my X.

Its a 96, and I bought it about two years ago with 76k miles on it.

:(

Update:
My '96 XLT now has 125xxx miles on it. Items I had to replace since last year at 103xxx.
Routine synthetic oil changes
IAS sensor
rear driver-side inside door latch
A/C ????? switch (forgot the name)
replaced brake pads and rear rotors, (fronts rotors were still good)
replaced front struts and rear shocks

Still runs like a dream. I love this truck (more than our new one - 2004 Volvo XC 90)and this site plain rocks!!!

I have a 1991 XLT that I purchased today and it has 330,000 KM on it. Seems to run great 4X4 appears to work properly. The only problem I have is the two rear passenger doors are stuck closed along with the rear hatch. Any suggestions would be great.

My 99 Eddie Bauer just turned 140k the other day.

Bought the truck from an auction at 118k back in '02, it used to be owned by pepsico so i assume it was a runner, that explains the high miles.

Since I got it at an auction i have been doing pretty much everything to it, slowley since i just got out of college this year, cause god only knows what the company did to it while they had it

Hear is my list so far:

Sea-Foam'd the Intake
Cleaned MAF
Cleaned TB + IAC
Accel Cold Air Intake

Changed Brake Fluid

Plugs - Bosh Platinums

Fuel Filter

Mobile 1 Synthetic
Motor Flush
Restore

Replaced Courtasy Lights with Xenon Hyper Whites
Custom Dash Kit

Here is what i have planned for the near future:
Mobile 1 tranny fluid flush and change
Mobile 1 gear lube change

Flushing radiator and replace thermostat while i am at it

Sound system (nothing fancy just decent 6x8's and a head unit, maybe replace stock sub with the mtx kit)

Shocks all the way around (aftermarket air ride replacements in rear)
AAL + Shackles in rear with a TT up front

That is pretty much it for this season, i just started taking it seriously since this summer when i graduated and have had the time and energy to.
