Regular stuff:
oil/oil filter (every 3K miles)
brake pads
air filter
A/C recharge
shocks
battery
tires

Other stuff:
Rear differential gasket seal ($1000)
windshield (twice)
rearview mirror
brake rotors
headlight knob ($10 bucks-dealership ripoff)

I have treated it well and vice versa. Just installed a 6-disc PIONEER cd changer(saved $70 doing it myself). I haven't taken it offroad, however we were buried in 20" of snow about 2 weeks ago and was able to get out with ease. I'm looking to put a 1-2" lift with 32X11.5 BFG tires on it. however, i'm kinda strapped for money, so it might be a while. watch out for it in the future though.

I decided to forget about the lift and big tires just cuz I'd rather keep it like it is. I just rolled over 128K a few weeks ago and its still goin strong. Some other things I've had replaced or put in since then.

thermostat
U-joint
K&N filter
radiator fan
tires

I'm extremely happy with my Explorer and plan on keeping it through college. My dad bought a '99 back in the spring and he seems to be happy with it. It tows our new boat with not a problem in the world.

At almost 160k, I have just had to replace the factory water pump and radiator. Seem as if there was some junk in the bottom of the radiator and it all came out at once, stuck in the impellers of the water pump and both went at the same time. Replaced the heater core, starter and exhaust last year. Other than that, just regular maintenance.

High-mileage Explorers

'92 Explorer Sport, 118,000 miles. Virtually trouble-free, with the (big) exception of the fragged OD gears in the transmission. Required complete rebuild and new cooler. A transmission seal failed a few thousand miles later, spraying everything with tranny fluid, and messing-up a ski trip. Exhaust resonator rusted-out (in sunny California!), I just bypassed it. Rear-end or U-joint makes a "clunk" every so often when transmission upshifts as I am de-celerating, but I've been told that Ford rear ends will "clunk" for a long time before they let go. (I hope!) Kinda hate to let it go, but am looking for a 4-door. Best riding & handling car/truck I've ever had. Lemme tell ya about my old Scout II...
Keep 'em rolling!
Randy

Selective memory at work

OOps... Forgot to mention that I am still putting-up with the leaky valve-cover gaskets. Makes for a kind-of continuous oil-change.

93 XLT 2WD 4DR - repairs

Bought this one new, now has 140k miles and the following were unplanned reapairs -

Starter
MAF Sensor
A/C (@120K miles - $1000)
Transmission (2 times, @ 87K miles & 135K miles $2,700 total)
Heater/AC Fan blower
Interior door handle pulls
Fan blade
Exhaust - Muffler
Thermotstat
Serpentine belt
Radius arm bushings

Expected maintenance items done -

Battery (3 so far)
Shocks (new)
Tires (new)
Brakes (new)
Oil - every 3k miles
Spark plugs & wires
Alignment

Current repairs needed -

Fuel tank gauge is broken
JBL Audio system - tape won't play & sub woofer is blown
Plastic hood release puller is broken
Black painted items are all faded (mirrors, wipers, roof rack, trim...)
Battery cables

With new tires, brakes, and shocks, it handles better than new, I think. Especially the shocks - no diving or rolling.

1993 XLT 2WD, 100,000 miles.

Shocks, brakes; all 4 power windows. The radio crapped out.

FYI, my BroncoII ran 248,000 miles and never had anything go wrong worth more than $100 to repair except for A/C compressors...sold it because I got tired of looking at it.

1996 4dr 2wd V8

Just bought it with 84K on the speedo.

According to owner, there was no problems. But it has been well-maintained with records to prove it. Left rear door handle needs fixin, and it needs shocks, plug wires, and TB cleaning (thanks for the Qtip tip!)

1991 xlt std 4x4 145,000 miles

Here we go...

New engine (two cracked heads/worn crank)
Two (2)!! power stearing pumps
Voltage regulator
Fuel pump relay
Universals
Brakes (front, rear, roters etc.)
Windshield
Tires
Battery cables
Starter
Starter relay
Ignition
3 door handles
R/A bushings
A/C- compressor, accumulator, hoses, dryer
T-Case Motor
Computer (ECM)
TPI sensor
O2 Sensor
Exhuast
Wheel Bearings
Shocks
Alternator
Theres more too....

I doubt I'd buy another. I don't even go four wheelin alot. It's my family vehicle.

They would be a hell of a good truck if...
1) All came with MANUAL shift 4x4
2) All came with a SOLID front axle- not independant suspension....

my .02 of course.

Just an update for my post:
needed Bar end links...under warentee
everything else seemes good for now.

92 XLT 136,000miles
Since I bought the truck about two years ago with 96,000miles on it I've done the following things to it;
Rear u-joint
replaced auto hubs with Spicer manuals
new upper and lower ball joints on both sides
new axle joints(two in steering knuckles)
right side wheel bearings
both axles drained and re-filled
new spark plugs-motorcraft
new plug wires-Bosch 8mm
thermostat
change oil about every 3,000miles, Valvoline10/30 and Fram filter
Fram air filter when needed
new exhaust from Cat back
O2 sensor

What it needs;
A/C rechange, needs conversion from R-12 to the new stuff
new rocker panels!
Coolent system flush/thermostat
left side stabilizer bar bracket

Think that about does it, she's been really good to me. I'm very happy with it. I've never had to add ONE drop of oil to it between oil changes, in my book thats a good truck!

still grabbing

I have a 91' explorer sport , 5spd.
170,000 miles
Replaced:
Exhaust
power steering pump
front wheel bearings
front seals
replaced broken hubs with warn mauals
all u-joints
balljoints
tie rods
replaced bad shocks with rough countrys
replaced o.k. springs with rough countrys
Brake booster seal

Needs to be replaced:
Thermostat
Clutch
Rear wheel bearings and seals
Radiator core support

This is just off the top of my head and i'm sure theres a few more things, but the truck is VERY reliable. I knew the previous owner he took it to about a 100k then i bought it.
No- the clutch is still original, it has never been replaced but it is getting weak. The same with the fuel pressure regulator, and the front rotors, like I said very reliable.

P.S.- did any body think of calling a ford rep. and submitting these they would be great for a commercial!!!! Does anybody remember that toyota pickup commercial. OOPS did I just say the T-word ....My bad.

bumping this up for the new guys

Thanks Tars...I try to keep it bumped up, but on this board it gets buaried after only 1 day. i'll help you keep it on top.

high mileage wear & tear

hmmmm...
1992 4dr 4x4 XLT 130,000

Radius Arm bushings and the wallowed out cross-member with the rivets from hell
shocks - now have air shocks to help me tow
3 sets of rotors... one actually wore through the facing and I had fins... thanks to my friendly Ford dealer not replacing the rotors he charged me for.
1 was because I tried to reuse the caliper pins.
New manual hubs - truck was stuck to the frame in gumbo for 4 days and I burnt them up trying to get out.
A/C Manifold and lines
Rebuilt tranny due to the same 4 day hiatus
front brake line wore through on the sway bar
3rd set of tires... I run Michelin 31x10.5 ATs with no problem on the stock (or mostly) suspension
Muffler and tailpipe at about 70,000
Just put on the 3rd set of wires and plugs
A/C Clutch or compressor is on its last legs... gonna convert
Door hinge needs to be replaced
Door striker replaced because of above hinge
Center console mount just broke
I scratched my front bumper when I totalled a Continental that stopped to let a drunk going the wrong way on a one way bridge pass by, so I put on a Smittybilt Winch mount tube bumper with a Warn 9000....(just pulled out a full-size Bronco 4x4 with a 16 foot trailer that was stuck in sand to the frame)
Transmission problem right now... lost all my ATF and I don't know if it killed the tranny or not. I am still trying to get it towed from way S. Texas.
Just about every electrical connector I try and disconnect breaks
Mirror keeps falling off the windshield
The dealer had to repaint it after my first trip in the mud... I went to the car wash and the paint peeled off
Stock radio/cassette (JBL) is starting to act up
Speedo has a mind of its own... I have seen several threads, and my speedo does them all
Slight coolant leak that turned into a spray out the rusted through freeze plug on the back of the passenger side head... try getting the old one out...I dare you
Has needed valve cover gaskets for about 9 years
power steering pump at about 70,000
master cylinder because I didn't see the worn through hole in the front brake line
2nd set of Warn manual hubs because the shop didn't tighten the nut after some brake work.
Soon to lose my Recall Firestone spare that is still under the truck... I have never had a flat tire at least...

I can't think of much else right now... God I love this truck. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It fits me like a glove and has taken me to more hunting and fishing spots than I can count. Lots of miles towing a 17 ft bass boat and a 5x8 Utility trailer with my 4-wheeler on it. I am looking for the best spray on pickup truck bed liner that comes in a blue so that I can paint the outside and make this thing last forever.

oh yeah... U-Joints

91 two door with 144,000

things replaced
---------------
everything

20,000 later...

Now it has 20,000 more than before, here's an update

94 XL 4x4 4.0L 5 speed, stock

It has 111000 kilometer, (about 62000 miles)
-front and rear brakes, ''rotor are warped(little bit, it's going away) and one rear drum is sticking''
-front shock(will change all 4 for edelbrock), ''did change but for Monroe Reflex''
-front u-joint(normal wear, I think)
-drop in K&N air filter
-plugs (side gaped like race plug)
-got trans down, replaced slave cylinder, clutch disk, pressure plate(all because of the pilot bearing dying, because clutch was still very good)
-O2 sensor(for prevention)
-egr valve(to much rust)

What is next:
-auto-hubs(maybe for manuals), ''did pass on to Warn manuals''
-clean MAF(regularly I must say)
-wires for the plugs ''changed them)
-finding what stupid sensor give check engine, ''stil does it but dont care any more''
-head gasket(leaking a litlle bit), ''should have said valve cover

To add to the list:
- rear bumper bend from stupid follower driver
- valve cover gaskets, cleaning intake manifold
- left side ball joint (right to come)
- electric shift motor (on last snow fall ?&*%$#), and
still not fixed
- rear window hinge that broke under corosion
- radiator needs to but only this spring

What would be fun(but no money to do)
-ARB lockers
-4" lift
-33 or 35 tires
-BBK superchearger(big boost)
-Atlas transfer case (with shift motor dead, wish could afford the security of it)
-Big fog lites
-Safari bar to hold the item before
