91 XLT 4X4 No major problems just the usual, brakes, clutch, shocks, ect. But now 4X4 won't kick in. I am investgating this. I have post on this problem but any info would help.
Thanks

97 xlt 4 door 4x4. 111,000 miles and no major replacements as of yet. 1 valve cover gasket and normal wear and tear items plus regular maint. stuff.

130k+ and going !

91 4door EB Green/Tan
130k + with little work done (so far)
Water pump finally died last weekend but I
replaced it while listening to the raiders lose
(yeah baby !).
Have never liked the brakes. Sometimes good, Sometimes spongey.
A/C has never worked very well. Maybe it will be my next project.
All in all, from the warnings and gripes I've heard, I've been pretty luckly with the rig. Most importantly, it can carry 4 sets of golf clubs.
ciao'

115,000

some power mods

normal tune up stuff oil, plugs etc.

Good question, I've been trying to decide if I should replace my Explorer or spend the $$ to rebuild it.

I have a 1991 Explorer XLT purchased new in 1990. It has 365,000 kms or I would guess just around 200,000 miles.

Only items I have replaced are,
tires - on third set and averaging 110,000 per set
clutch-currently on second, original replaced at 210,000 kms
front hubs-replaced with Warn Manual locking at 250,000 kms as automatics would lock unexpectedly
front wheel bearings-replaced at this time
main driveshaft ujoints also replaced at this time, only 1 needed but replaced both
starter motor-replaced original at 300,000 kms
parking brake cable-replaced at 300,000 kms as it was rusted solid. Still stiff.
rivet for power door lock mech snapped at 290,000 km. Re riveted
battery-on second but needs replacement.

Things that need to be fixed.
Paint is shot, though it is original and only bad on hood and roof
bad rust holes at seam below rear passenger doors both sides
Top end of motor is very noisey from around 300,000 km point
New intermittant rattling sound from engine unknown cause
sudden backfiring and loss of power under power
anitfreeze loss, about 1/2 pint every tank of gas possibly seeping from around water pump.
Stereo is intermittant, plug on rear is loose. Fixed once but did something dumb when replacing it and bent locking tabs on side so now radio extraction tool will not

I'm wondering whether to replace the motor, and rad (rad is original) with rebuilds. In it's present state I would guess it's trade in value is nil so wonder if I should put several $$$ into it to keep it on the road for another 5-6 years.

But wonder if I am making a mistake as I'm sure there are other items that will be ready to go. Mainly concerned about other possible rust areas, rest of body is actually good including fenders. Main problem area seems to be common on all the Explorers I have seen up here in Canada, salt is a real killer here.

I suppose if trade in is nil and rebuild is uneconomical would parting it out be a better idea instead of a trip to the scrap yard as it is fairly well loaded.

Eg, articulated sport seats (good condition), factory prem snd with amp/subwoofer, fact sunroof, 5sp manual trans etc.

1991 XLT 2WD

I'm actually very happy with its age/repairs needed:

Replaced Radius Arms & all bushings
power steering pump
water pump
radiator
injectors and alternator- very soon
shocks a bunch
two heads
no tranny work ever
two stereos
all gaskets at 175K, all hoses just done
TPS, MAS, IAC, ECT, PCV, O2 intermittently
too many thermostats and lots of coolant
couple fuel filters
front bearings
a/c compressor
original paint and rims in great shape

Can't wait to rebuild and get another 5 out of her!!

1996 V8 XLT 2wd: 122,000....:(

-Airfilter
-PLugs and wires
-Battery
-Tires
-Both Exaust Manifolds

Other than the manifolds...everything has been fine

I have a 1991 XLT, and am the third owner, bought in Spring of 2000. I have all of the records as an Excel File, but thought I'd throw in some of the highlights for your referral.

The only items outstanding is the lifters are starting to go and it's time for tires (lift, rims, etc...), and I just hit 250,000 kilometers.

Ive got a 92'EB 4x4 (129k). Had it since sep 01. No major problems YET. A couple of things looming; pwr steering pump leaks bad, trans was leaking but stopped(i know its just a matter of time when need overhaul). Some little things i need to fix: pwr mirrors, horn(just went out), drivers side pwr door lock. Thats about it, happy with it so far. My first choice for SUV was a jeep, i hate too admit! Then i saw this one and fell in love. NO REGRETS!

A couple of things sound familier to me, the pwr steering leak on my Explorer was traced to the hoses, replaced two of them.

My pwr mirrors stopped working on both sides in the left/down positions so figure it's the switch. Figure I just have to pop switch maybe just reseat the plug. Think this started to act up after I took door apart to rerivet the pwr door lock mech....

Pwr door lock stopped working, the actuator snapped the small rivit holding it to the doorframe. Replaced this and everything is fine again.

Have an old CJ, top down cruising, it's a babe magnet. Ex is more practical according to the wife....

Nevermind practicality. What does your wife say about the fact that you're a babe magnet??? :D

95XLT

i just put synthetic in mine(valvoline). They had a discusion about it before regarding pro's & con's. Only downside is that it might leak, mine hasnt yet. I say its worth the extra bucks.

My 91 5-Speed has 188,000 Miles. It had to have a new Slave cylinder put in at around 158,000 miles. At that time a new clutch was installed. It needs some tranny work, but still shifts OK. It has a lifter (classic with Ford OHV V6's) that makes some noise when the motor is cold. Other than that it's been awesome. OH, I had to replace the high-pressure line on the power steering too. Plus I think it needs some new hubs. And the Autozone heater core SUCKS!!!

UPDATE....

The old thing has 218,000 miles now. She still runs like a top. I had to have the Mazda POS tranny rebuilt at about 192,000. What an awesome truck though. It'll be a really hard thing for me to get rid of it nowadays. Don't think I have the heart to be honest.

welcome 92eddie!

This IS an awesome website and message board! I just happen to stumble across it a couple of months ago. To whoever founded it i say THANK YOU!!

Yeah I say synthetic is definatly worth it. My truck will never run on anything besides synthetic. Amsoil is like even better because of the extended run time (25,000 miles or a year with a filter change at 12,500 or 6 months)

i have a 94 navajo lx with 165,000 miles on it all thats been replaced to date is
tires
wheel bearings
brakes
tps sensor
plugs and wires
rear end cover gasket
i currently have problems with the fuel pump and relay
and the transfer case wont engage into 4x4 anymore

1996 xlt auto with 175k miles. all original except obvious maintainence items.

current troubles include low speed abs pulse issue, inoperative blower fan and front end bearing/diff noise.

94 Limited 90,000 miles

Plugs (Bosch +4)
Wires (Bosch)
Air Intake (KKM True-Rev)
Intake Gaskets (Lower, Fuel Rail, Upper)
Valve Cover Gaskets (both)
PCV Valve and PCV Valve Grommet
Radial Arm Bushings
Front Brakes (Rotors, Calipers, Pads)
Rear Brakes (pads & springs)
Cleaned Injectors and replaced O-Rings
Water Pump
Passenger Rear Window actuator & motor
EGR Valve and DPFE Sensor (may still need EVR)

I think that's about all...

I just turned 100K on it. Still runs and looks good for a '97 no mods except for K&N air filter. Mobile 1 and synthetic in the tranny
