i had that... are you sure its not the heat shield on the exhaust..... my dad did something to it and its stopped now .

I checked the heat shield and it sounds fine and I just had the converter repaired.

My '97 XLT (4.0 SOHC) has over 100k on it now and the only thing that I've had to replace is the t-stat, and do regularly scheduled maintenance on it like oil changes, brakes, tires, etc. Now my air conditioning isn't working...

Just thought I'd add in my info, wow this thread is so old!!
I have a 1991 Eddie Bauer with 143,000. It had about <90,000 when I got it.

The tranny was rebuilt at about 100k but the shop said it had been rebuilt previously as well, so thats two tranny rebuilds. The water pump blew at about 135k which led to the intake manifold at 135k and a leaking radiator at the same time which led to bearing material being found in my oil along with coolent so replaced the engine at 135k miles. Though it still ran better than the day I got it!! And had more power than from the factory new!! Would have eventually thrown a rod though. Ok now that is has 143k I had an inspection done and this is what needs to be replaced and fixed, Upper and lower ball joints both sides, three front axle u-joints, hub seals, radius arm bushings at the frame both sides. And thats pretty much it for major stuff. The early generatino explorers are amazing, this truck will last till 200k I bet. And if it wasnt for my stupidity of offroading with a cooling problem then I would still have the original engine in. The engine in it now has 90k and runs perfect with perfect compression as well. Too bad I may be selling the truck in three weeks

from what i understand that is normal, mine does it and in traffic I can hear many other makes and models that do it. I guess it has something to do with cycling the ac on one in a while in order to maintain the system or keep condensation build up, im not sure thouhg, but I do know its normal.

The A/C clicking sound is just the compressor turning on and off, its normal, so dont be worried guys!!

95 xlt 4x4 with 134K.
just acquired last week. got a new t-case motor saturday, new dash light bulbs.
had a tranny rebuild at 121K. Needs front brakes. Radio lights don't work, but display and radio work just fine. 4wd lights go out when headlights are turned on. That's about it. Hopefully, it will last quite a long time.

1993 Limited at 202,000 highway miles...

replaced radiator, radius arm bushings, thermostat, new clutch fan... It leaks oil at the rear seal and oil pan, but hasnt been fixed yet.

Also 1997 Explorer Limited 89,000 miles just recently bought it few months ago never had problems yet

Recent repair woes at 80K

At 80K, my '97 XLT AWD (V8) needed significant repairs, which pissed me off because it was great at the 65K checkup and I maintain the sh*t out of it. Here they are (not including regular maintenance and checkups):

25K: mal***tioning remote antenna - repaired under warranty.
28K: loose left rear window motor - repaired under warranty.
35K: intermittently failing manual door lock switch - never repaired, hasn't re-occurred.
60K: Cruise control light burned out - replaced myself with bulb from Taurus, cuz the "module" direct replaceemtn was $110. Had to remove airbag...bad design IMO.
65K: Leaky rear pinion gasket on driveshaft - had dealer replace $85.
80K: A/C hose split - no A/C, needed all 4 ball joints replaced up front, new control arms and bushings, new front driveshaft to fix bad bearing noise, rear brakelight not working ($400!!), O2 sensor. Total cost (I did the brakelight myself): $2100!!

schadler~ hey dont complain... you have a truck that cost around $32,000 brand new.... 2100 bucks isnt bad at all. your talking about 6% of the cars initial value in repairs. If you cant afford the repairs, dont buy such a bug vehicle. Remember, nothing is trouble free!
