My insulator pad looks like crap, as does most everybody elses, from what I have seen at junkyards and such. I am getting ready to redo mine, went and got the new retainers today, and had plans to strip all the black plastic skin(what little is left), and repaint it with high temp flat black. But I got to wondering, is there any way to recover the pad? I am not sure what the black skin is made of, but it would have to be some high temp stuff. Anybody have a idea? Anybody redone their's? Damn things cost a fortune to buy new, so that is out of the question.

I repainted mine using flat black hi temp paint and it looked like new...

I ditched mine about 8 years ago. :)

You can get a pad from a later model truck that may be in better shape.

You can cut a new pad yourself and retain the stock fasteners

You can remove it and clean up the metal underside of the hood

You might be able to spray adhesive a new "skin" onto the pad if you wish, not sure how it will hold up but it might.

Well I got the paint and went to remove the pad, and it crumbled like a potato chip, so so much for that idea. I am looking into a new one, the dealer says its been discontinued, like many of the other odd parts I have been after. I am tempted to just leave it off, the pad was rubbing the top of the polished intake I put in, scuffing it up.

no pad is fine, the issue might be the paint on your hood but I have had no problems, just wax the hood more. :P

Well the paint on the hood is shot already, I am saving for some body work and a repaint, once it is repainted I will definitly put one back on, even if its another junk one, but till then the hell with it, they want $200 for one everywhere you look, plus shipping.

You can buy the pad material for like $30 at Pep Boys

Cool, what about the molded sections, with the raised pockets? If anything pokes up too high, it will tear it up, right? I will check it out tho, that sounds alot better than 200

i dont even have a hood pad

Yep I've removed my hood pad also.

Well I checked Pepboys, they quit stocking it 6 months ago, so out of luck there. I tried Napa, they want $90 and its too short both ways, so no go.

I tried powerwashing mine, it did nothing really. It just soaks up paint too.

Mine in my 94 went in the garbage a year ago, and my 96 will bid good-bye to its pad soon as I remember to take it out.

Just get some high temp dynomat. It's specifically designed for under the hood.

That's expensive stuff too. Mine is all torn. I just left it that way for now. I might try to paint it. It will come off intact.
