how do you make the orig. aluminum directional rims on a 92 X look new again

any one ever clean up the original rims. i like them but the clear coat is lifting and the aluminum under is corroding and really looks like crap? if you have done this please give the details. ive sprayed alot of things but never over aluminum. not sure if regular clear coat will work or if something better is out there. thanks for any help. :exp:

oh yeah and what would you recomend to polish the aluminum before spraying.
