2006 Explorer Limted V8
Everytime I'm driving down the road, I always see another 2nd generation Explorer and I always look for the V8 AWD rubber emblem on the fender.

So far I've only seen a couple. Anyone know the percentage of Explorers that were built with this drivetrain? Do I own a "rare" vehicle? Or did the cash for clunkers claim all the V8 Explorers?

Considering the original window sticker said my Explorer sold for $31,000. I figured this would have been a hard sell for any vehicle in 1996.

Another question, I saw a 2nd gen Explorer at Wal-Mart the other day and it had an emblem on the rear that said "Control trac". What is that? Is this like a limitied slip rear differential that was an option on the 90s Jeep Wranglers?

There are thousands and thousand and thousands of awd explorers.

Control Trac is the name of the 4wd system used in the v6s.

Welcome to the forum.

Well as for your control trac question, it is a feature on 2nd generations with a 4X4 transfercase. It acts as a traction control system for all 4 tires when it is engaged in 4 wheel drive. Its a really nice feature when driving in snow and ice.

Your question about the V8 AWD 2nd generations... well i know there is less of them than the V6 models. There were a lot of them made though, but I don't know how many were in 96 since that was the first year Ford made that combination for the explorer

The difference between the AWD in the V8 vs. the Auto4WD in the V6 is that the Control Trac in the V6 models is electronically controlled.

The V8 models use a transfer case that is mechanically engaged at all time with a fluid coupling that allows the front wheels to turn at a different speed when turning.

The V6 models use a transfer case that has an electromagnetic clutch that engages whenever current is sent to it on the (infamous) brown wire. (search on Brown Wire Mod for more info).

On the 95 - 96 Control Trac, there is 2wd, 4Auto & 4Low selections for the TC.

On the 97+ Control Trac, there is 4Auto, 4High & 4Low selections for the TC. The 97+ is also full time 4wd like the V8, but the slip function is controlled electronically instead of with a fluid coupling.

I still remember having to replace my brakes the first time and the guy at autozone had no idea what I was talking about since "all explorer's come with a V6 sir." suffice to say I didnt go back there

The Gen I's (91-94) were all 4.0 OHV. V8s started in 95 and the 4.0 SOHC started in 97. Also, most Mountaineers are the V8.

mines a v8 AWD.... I tore the V8 emblem off, I like a clean look. So I'm sure people who know explorers/mountaineers assume I have a V6 but honestly... who cares? my gas gauge knows lol
