Hi Dear Folks.

Hope you can help me, I changed the water pump in my explorer limited, 6 cyl, engine 3.5, I do not know how the timing chain was moved, I used the tool to hold the camshaft and now i had this problem, so my question is if somebody knows how to put the engine in time?, I tried to check with a service shop and they want $1500 at least, so i do not have that amount of money.

how I know the time is moved, because i had the code about the camshaft is not sync

please let me know I will appreciate a lot.

Did you remove the small VCT chains, or just the long main one? Align the colored links with the timing marks

Thanks for the diagram, it give me a big idea, my other questions are:

Both in clockwise order?
how i move the camshaft?
can i move them from the big screw "red box"?

How did you move them when you were changing the water pump? With the spark plugs removed, the engine will turn more easily (no compression). Do everything like before: set the crankshaft at #1 TDC, then install the cam holding tools. Then remove the chain. But instead of pulling the WP, just put the chain back on correctly. You could use the VCT bolts to turn the cams, but it would be better to use the gear teeth (a prybar or big channellocks). Triple-check the timing chain & marks before releasing the tensioner and gluing the timing cover back on.

Hey Steve8316, thanks for your info and help.

I did not move them when i changed the water pump, I removed all the parts, and before move the timing chain I put the cam holding tools, and then I removed the chain and other parts to change the water pump, then I start to put the pieces together and when I tried to put the chain, this one was did not fit in the gear teeth, so I moved the main pole like 2 or 3 millimeters and that was all, and then well i finished the engine and I got the issue.

Thanks for the instructions i will follow them step by step.

please let me know any other comment. thanks again

Now that you know to look for the colored links in the timing chain, you can put it back on right. If your chain doesn't have colored links, buy a new Ford chain that does.

If you are in there doing the water pump I would have done tensioners, chains, gears, etc. Do it once and do it right. The chains stretch, the tensioners wear out. The gears get worn. Etc. If it was me I would order the kit, go back in, and replace them all so you are not doing the job again in a couple years (unless you already did it.)
