Well, Gang you all have been most helpful to me so far!! This morning while driving my kid to school, I experience what I can only describe as transmission slippage. I was at a stop light on a hill and when I took my foot of the brake the truck actually rolled backward and engine revvved like I had the clutch in. This would not be a problem except for the fact I have an Automatic!! When I put my foot on the brake and tried again, it took off as normal. I did experience the same revving two more times before I got home. At this point it has happened only from a stop. (No slipping while driving)

The Trans level is ok, color seems ok, but, it does have a rather "burnt" smell to it. I have a 97' V8 AWD. Can anyone offer some advice on how I should proceed in further evaluating the situation??

Also if there is anyone who knows of a decent mechanic or shop in the Cincinnati to Middletown area of Ohio and could offer some referrals, I would greatly appreciate that as well. I would like to be able to say money is no object but, in my case it is....

Have you changed the fluid/filter yet? If not, do so soon just to be sure.

First thing to do is check the shifter linkage, it may simply be out of adjustment, meaning the trans slipped into N even through your column shifter said D

Hmmm... I called a couple places to see about a Tranny flush and when I mentioned the linkage ajustment the fella said the 1997 AWD Transmission is electrical and has no linkage. He recommended taking it to a place specializing in transmissions to have it looked at.

Lol, seriously, who hires these retards? Don't do a tranny FLUSH, as this sometimes results in damage to a higher mileage transmission. Just drop the pan, change the filter, and top it off (should be about 4 - 5 quarts).

hes partially correct, the trans is mostly automatic and does not use typical automatic transmission linkage, but the shifter is a cable shifter and does move the trans shift linkage from PRND21
if you slip into N or 2 you wont go anywhere like you expect

Sure can, it can wear out, move, cable stretch, bolts come loose, detents in the shifter itself wear out, I have seen it all.....

The same fella that said that it had no linkage told me that a flush does the following; Replaces 95% of the fluid while simultaneously cleaning the filter.

He said just draining and changing the filter only replaces 20% of the fluid!

To his credit he suggested I take it somewhere else anyway!

I will check the cable/linkage as soon as I get a chance tomorrow. You guys have been very helpfull and enlightening to say the least.

Oh this vehicle has 120,000 mi on it. So you commend a fluid and filter change versus a flush correct???

Do both if you ask me, drop the pan and change the filter. A pan drop will require 4-5 quarts of new fluid. Drive it for a month then do the backflush.

These guys are worried that the backflush will loosen up sludge in your trans and cause is to fail, this is why I recommended the BG machine only.

A pan drop will change 20% of the fluid
the backflush will change 95% of the fluid

the filter however cannot be cleaned, just replaced

the tranny shop I'm takin my truck into, to get my tranny rebuilt, said it's been a fairly common occurence (to them) for the 4R70W tranny to have slipping issues, and even "neutral conditions". That's what mine has, it won't shift past 2. Same year truck, but more miles. Another possibility (although doubtful) is the Transmission Range Selector... still gotta look it up by Neutral Safety Switch, though. That may or may not fix the problem.
If the flush doesn't change anything, you could spend the $50 on the TRS/NSS, but it wouldn't surprise me if it needed a rebuild.
