Tonight im going to be makeing a intake BETTER then the Mac intake for less cost, a lot less cost. Im going to take a picture of everything, basically i got the pipe thats 3 1/4 inch mandrel bent pipe from car quest. Got coupleing from home depot, i already had a rigged high preformance filter on the maf. Ill basically show you all how to make your very own intake for a lot less cost and have the same gains if not better for around $60-$75 includeing the filter.

SpectrePerformance.com Check out there stuff. Made my own intake, very nice results.

Thats good stuff too, my way came out awesome.

Going to write the article now.

Well im going to start off with the picture of the actual pipe i picked up:

Here is the label on it for a part number if you would like to pick it up right from Car Quest:

I put the stock pipeing ontop of the pipe and marked it like so:

Came out with this, i actually left a little more on the side that connected to the MAF so it went a little futher away:
Wash this very well inside and out with hot soapy water and a rag 3 times before using.

Now here is the picture of the couplers i got from Home Depot:

A picture of the label, its basically just a 3 inch coupler with that has metal around it, you really can't miss em:

All i did was pulled them apart from each other

Put the couplers on and the MAF on with the air filter, the clamps are 4 inch hose clamps:

Before and after:

Finished product, ofcourse you can paint it...i will be paint matching it to the truck as soon as its a little warmer. I also advice you head on ebay and order a MAF adapter for the MAF so you can attach the aftermarket filter:

Costs for everything with tax:
Pipe - $23
Couplers and clamps - $11
Filter - $36 ish depending where you go
MAF Adapter - $13 ish off of ebay
Paint - $10 for some paint and clear that comes out of a can

Total : $93
Thats much cheaper then a Mac you safe yourself over $50 bucks and you can paint it how you choose.

Here's a link on making a breather line oil separator

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148135&highlight=oil+seperator.

for 96-98 v8 guys-
drill a hole 1/2 " diameter into the air tube in the stock IAT sensor location
install a 1/2" o-ring onto base of IAT sensor until it is tight against base
insert a 1/2" outer x 3/8" inner rubber grommet into the air tube. Make sure it is fully seated around the ring of the hole
Push the IAT sensor through the grommet, while turning it clockwise until it seats fully into the grommet and tube. Check that it seals well. This may take a few tries.

It's good
where is the Intake air temperature sensor?
Where is the breather tube for the oil fill neck?

Why do you have zip ties holding the air filter in place?

The IAT on my truck has to be built into the MAF because there was not one in the stock tubeing. If you do have a IAT you drill a hole for it, then get a ruber gromet from a auto store and put the IAT in.

The breather tube is off, i replaced it with a filter. If you want the breather tube back to the same as you would do for the IAT.

The zip ties hole the filter into place, im waiting for my MAF adapter...

very nifty!! I might have to see what I can do this weekend on the SOHC

Quick question for ya:

The company I usually go to for my mandrel bends, http://store.racing-solutions.org/index.html, has three type of piping

Steel
Aluminized Steel
Aluminum

Which is better at not absorbing/conducting heat? For my exhaust I just buy whatever is cheapest, but for an intake I want the better. Ill also be wrapping it in header wrap

Search for the thread I started, I think it is Could this make a cold air intake colder. Everyone came to the conclusion that wrapping the intake pipe will not do much due to the fact that the air is not in the intake for very long(not sitting in there, so it will not pick up much heat). Most intake pipes are made of aluminum. Check out spectreperformance.com they have polished aluminum looks very nice(what I helped my buddy put on his Camaro)

Also you can check out my thread about my intake.....Spectre Intake

Im pretty sure the pipeing i used is steal, your best off problably useing that. Even though its heavier i think aluminum would suck up heat even faster. Im sure we could make a actual cold air kit for our trucks as well, problem is a lot of us like to off road and a CAI and Mud/Water would be the death of our motors.

Only bad part about that pipeing you can buy at Autozone or Pep boys is its very small...maybe 2.5 inches. This pipeing i have is a little over 3 inches in size and i had to stretch the 3 inch couplers over the pipeing by a could 1/4 inch.

I could make these intakes for all of you guys if you want, ill do it for the costs of it and if you wanna pay me for labor that would be on you. All i would ask is if i paint it for you to pay some labor...if not painted i wouldn't care to help you guys out.

Also to save some money on it, you could order the MAF and air filter kit off of ebay for i think it was $25 bucks. Would save you about $10-$20 bucks depending on the other parts you buy.

Or they could be powdercoated:D

Powdercoating is big money now adays even for a simple ass pipe, i had one place locally estimate a cost of $90 for just some chrome powder coating.

I saw your results...not bad man! I don't think you would be able to paint match my trucks paint in powder coat.

As far as the pipe sucking up heat..... Might this make a cold air intake colder??

As for the size of the piping.....Great Products, Great Prices
Spectre has piping in 2.5(chrome), 3(chrome), 3(polished alum), and 4inch(polished alum)

As for the intake sucking up water or not being good offroad..... High Quality drop in vs. cold air intake

I hope those clear some issues up. The pipe heating up really should not be an issue due to the fact that the air is not sitting in the pipe ever. It is constantly being moved through the pipe. I had much of the same questions when I started with my intake.
