infamous cv joint front driveshaft

Recently bought a 97 sport and I love the truck however the guy I bought it off of decided to remove the front driveshaft "to improve gas mileage" I'd heard of this before so I didn't think anything of it when he told me. Low and behold winter is coming so I decide to put the shaft back in so I can get my 4wd when i need it. What he neglected to tell me was the driveshaft has a torn boot and needs to be rebuilt. Needless to say I'm a little ticked and after doing some research on the board found out that you can't rebuild the stupid thing. So my question is has anyone figured out how to rebuild it yet or if not then how much am I looking for to buy a new one?

driveshafts can easily be rebuilt, contact any drivetrain shop in your area.
Just because the slip yoke boot has a tear in it does not mean it needs a rebuild.

Also a rebuild usually consist of new U joints, a new CV joint if so equipped, and cleaning and lubing of the slip yoke. Also they can balance the new shaft.

I seriously doubt it needs to be rebuilt just because of a tear. Also where did you read it can't be rebuilt?

I would replace it with a used one they are generally trouble free. Its quicker cheaper and easier than any other option. If you have trouble locating one at a reasonable price I can come up with one pretty quick and cheap. $20 + whetever it costs to ship ny to ct

i did a search and that's what the consensus was that they can't be rebuilt. However, by can't be rebuilt I mean you can't do it by yourself, I understand it can be sent out to have that done. I'll call around tomorrow and see what I can find, autozone is listing them on their website for 53 and change with a limited lifetime warranty so I might just take that route.

apparently autozone screwed up the pricing online, the core charge was 53 bucks not the whole axle :roll: but I wound up going to a junkyard and got one with 19k on it for 85 bucks so back in business. Only problem now is the 4wd hi and low lights flash when i'm doing 60+ mph. Anyone have a clue why that's happening. The truck has a new transfer case in it however it has oil all over the top of it because it came out of the breather. Either because they overfilled it or the front driveshaft was disconnected for a while which made the electrical stuff pretty wet. Was I supposed to reset the computer when i installed the driveshaft or is there more to it?
