I have a 96 2DR Sport XLT with the 4.0L V6. Would like to replace with a small block V8. The orginal motor and auto trans are on their last legs with 140000 miles.

YES it is more possible then you might think, you see the 96 model year 4 door explorer was available with the 5.0L V8, the truck is the same as your from the front doors forward.

You need the entire drivetrain, wiring, computer, etc from the donor.

Yes it's possible and has been done many times very successfully. Try searching for engine swap, 5.0 swap etc...

I also spiked the punch while I was at the punch bowl
