In my 1994 xlt with the a4ld i was having leaking tranny fluid at the bell housing. I stopped this problem with fluid conditioner After that I drove it for 20 or so miles and it started to slip and make howling sounds. Also after the ex sits overnight it takes 30 secs for it to go into gear out of park or from any other gear. Please someone if you know what is happenin let me know! Is it time to put this a4ld out to pasture?

Check your fluid level, sometimes a delayed engage can simply be low fluid level. Also some of the additives that you can put in are crap they clog the valves and lube passages. Most likely your tranny is gone though if it is slipping and howling.
Nick:(

hmm i had that problem after cahnging out my tranny filter and fluid. i used a kit from a crappy store i wont mention which store..but they sell DISCOUNT AUTO PARTS. anyways the kit did not come with O-rings for the filter, even though the guy told me the kit was COMPLETE. after this change it imedialty start the whinnig when changing gears as well as the delayed shift. I would get a new filter and new O-rings for the Tranny...DONT keep driving or it will eventually blow up going down the highway like mine :-)

though fluid around the belhousing is often a sign of the front pump seal being bad.
