i have a 98 xlt and the heator select dial the one that you select the hot or cold setting doesn't seem to be working. what can cause this to do this? when i try to get the outside air in by the vent and the setting all the way in the cold it blows out hot air tlike the heater was on so in turn my a/ c won't work either. is it just a vacum line or what could it be?

Could be a blendoor motor.

A vaccuum line under the dash has no reason to break or pop off, so I doubt that is the problem. Not enough vaccuum wouldn't be a problem either or your engine wouldn't be running for crap. The blend door is a common problem for your year though. Do a search and you should come up with a lot of information regarding it.

It's not really that expensive if you do it yourself, but it does take lots of time. :frustrate

what am i looking into here as far as replacing the blender motor and how can i test it to make sure. where exactly is this motor at?

Do a search, some one has posted a link with pictures. It is common problem on Fords, just not X's.

welcome to my world....the 91 and 92's didnt' have an off feature...there for even in the summer..with the selector on the coldest mode...i still get warm air blowing at me :(

my wife just totaled my 1st gen this is how i ended up with the 98 but anyway you have to put the selector on max a/c to not let any outside air in. in your manual it actually tell you the same thing.
