Not the remote, but the keypad on the door. I read in the manual that the code for the keypad on the door is taped to the computer. Where's the computer? If it's not taped to the computer, or the previous owner changed the factory code, can a dealership reset it?

Not that I'll use it all that often, but it would be nice to have the option available to me, just in case.

Thanks in advance.

The computer is in the rear jack compartment. Look in and it's toward the front. You'll see a label with 5 digis on it. The factory code cannot be reset. But you can make your own that will work additonally.

Thanks, I'll look for it when I get home.

No, the factory code cannot be changed so the sticker you find on the computer will work. Then you can create your own code. Search the board and you will find a zillion threads on this topic.

Found it. The code sure was hard to see. It was on the side of the computer, and probably less than an inch from the inside panel. I could barely make out the numbers, even when slightly pushing the computer back, and bending the plastic panel out a bit. Programmed my own code in, too. Real easy to do. Punch in the factory 5 digit code. Hit the 1-2 button. Type in your new 5 digit code.

I should probably write down the factory code somewhere before my eyesight gets any worse.

OMG I have been looking for as solution to this for so long. Im going to try this tonight.

When I opened the Jack Compartment in the back, I had to look on the right side of the computer, which has only about 1" of clearance from the inside of the plastic panel (which is the shell of the compartment). You must have a good flashlight and good eyesight in order to see the code because you're looking at it at a very odd angle. If you can't see it, I'm sure you can just unbolt the computer and move it slightly so that you can read the code. The first 3 digits were the easiest for me to make out. The last 2 I could barely read. I'll post up pictures tonight. I'm not sure if this is for all years/trims, but mine is a '98 XLT 5.0 AWD.

Well I found it and works great. I didnt even need a flash light. THanks Guys !

I love the internet. The dealer probably would have charged you $50 for the code.

quick question about the keypad since were on the subject. I've got the factory code card, so i know the factory setting. But the entry pad doesnt seem to respond to the code. I can lock the doors by pressing the 7/8 and 9/0 keys together. Is there something that needs to be activated for the pad to work, or should it work by default? just curious. thanks in advance

Check the sticker on the computer. I guess it's possible the # on the card is wrong? Maybe came from a different vehicle? When you punch in the factory/personal code, it should unlock the drivers side door only. I believe you press the 5/6 key to unlock the rest of the doors...It's got to be pressed immediatley after (within 5 seconds) entering the factory/personal code.

I could be wrong. This is new to me as well, as I've had the explorer for only a couple weeks.

The pics

Just in case anyone wants to see exactly what we're talking about:

Open like so:

See the Computer toward the front of the vehicle:

See the sticker on the right side of the computer:

The code is printed on this sticker. You can't see the code in these pictures. It will be difficult for you to read the code, but I'm sure you'll be able to see it if you have decent eyesight and a flashlight.

Hey thanks a ton! The factory preset card given to me was wrong =/ but i checked the computer and it was completely different. punched it in worked the first time. This will be great for surfing, no more hiding my keys in the bumper ;) Thanks again for the help

The keypad is my favorite feature about my X. Too bad they don't have it on all cars. Although I never had a problem, I still don't trust it 100%. If I am far away from home I always take my keys rather than locking them in the truck.

3/4 will unlock the rest.
