The older ones had clutches in them and could be rebuilt. I am betting yours does. I think you tested it pretty good the other night though. Maybe thats why your concerned now. :D

I do not know on these later ones, but it would be interesting to know, since I have one.

From what Boomin said...it sounds like the 100 +/- dollar rebuild kit for the limited slip was a pain in the a$$. I'd much rather say forget it and either have an open carrier put in a choose one of the many lunchbox lockers for open carriers...or put in a 350(?) dollar No-Slip. Any of these will work better than that factory limited slip will ever work. ;)

I will have to ask my friend how much hers cost to do. You read it right, my female friend rebuild her own in a 90 ranger. She installed the 3.73 gears and the limited slip (rebuilt it) out of another vehicle. I was proud of her. :D

Information On Limited-Slips

I would know when my LSD is getting weak or losing its bite, because when mine grabs, I know it. It's kind of hard to tell if a LSD is still good or not. Only really way to tell is to factor in the mileage on it, the use on it, and how hard it is exactly driven and how often it's maintained (fluids, additives, etc.).

Clutches can be replaced, but need to be done correctly. If you put in too many clutches, you can burn them up quicker or cause your wheels to lock up when they are not suppose to. I would recommend putting either a newer style Limited-Slip. Here is a pic of an Auburn cut in half to show you the clutches:

and a locker with be over kill but better i will have to think about it thanks

edit, i took to long to post andf missedyour Drew thank you also i will look at it later b/c if i read it now i will forget it by midnight

In work clothes and didn't want to get muddy? You must have a better job than most of us. LOL Just kidding. I typically wear dockers when I am in class.

i work in a gas station, and go to school still.

But nice black pants, button up collered shirt, and tie. and the Dr. Scholl's gel sole shoes, if you have to stand for 8 hours a day on tile they kick ass :D

The no-slip acts like a limited slip when going through turns and locks when needed. ;) Should help you next time you get in a "situation" like the other day. :D

Ohh...you dress fancy. I just wear dockers and polo type shirts. I hate ties and no one else wears them except one administrator. I do have the shoes though! :D Gotta love Dr. Shoals for standign long hours.

i tested mine by doing one hell of a brake torque. and check ur marks.

take it for a 10 min drive, put it in park, jack the rear up off the ground and see if you can turn either tire. It should have a little driveline slop but other than that make sure the opposite wheel does not turn the other way.

does it matter if the engine is running?

the 10 min drive is to warm up the rear

The traction lock diff. is very easy to change the clutches. If you are going in to change the fluid, do the clutches. The kit used to be about $50, I bought two, and have installed extra clutches in two different 8.8's. The factory count is three frictions per side, and there are a couple of back to back steels. I simply alternated the steels and frictions, and got four in each side.

There are shims to play with, to adjust for some play. I ended up with little or no shims to get the four fictions in there. The traction locks don't last 100k, they don't last 50,000 miles. Driving habits and conditions wear them out. Good luck,

well i failed the test, as Boomin said, then i jackup one rear tire and hit the gas i failed that test too. so i could go find, clean up, take out the out 8.8, then put in the new one, and lastly put on a locker,

or drop $50to repair it hummm, and then lock the front for about the same $ without having to get a new axle??

The minimum torque differential from right to left that the Torque-Lok diff will support is 20 lb*ft. Heck, for that matter, I suspect the resistance fo the seals will add up to 20 ft*lbs!

Here's the specs for the test procedure

Bench Check

With Traction-Lok® Torque Tool T59L-4204-A check the torque required to rotate one differential side gear (4236) while the other is held stationary. The initial break-away torque should be no less than 27 Nm (20 ft-lb).

In-Vehicle Check

WARNING: A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH A LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL (4026) WILL ALWAYS HAVE BOTH WHEELS DRIVING. IF, WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING SERVICED, ONLY ONE WHEEL IS RAISED OFF THE FLOOR AND THE REAR AXLE (4001) IS DRIVEN BY THE ENGINE (6007) , THE WHEEL ON THE FLOOR COULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE STAND OR JACK.

WARNING: AEROSTAR E-4WD VEHICLES WILL DRIVE OFF A JACK OR HOIST IF ANY WHEEL IS LIFTED OFF THE FLOOR, WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND THE TRANSMISSION (7003) ENGAGED IN GEAR, OR MAY ROLL AWAY IF ANY WHEEL IS RAISED OFF THE FLOOR WITHOUT SETTING THE PARKING BRAKE.

A Limited-Slip differential can be checked for proper operation without removing the differential case (4204) from the rear axle housing (4010) .

Jack up one rear wheel and remove the wheel cover. Transmission must be in neutral and parking brake not applied.

Install Tool T59L-4204-A on the axle shaft flange studs as shown.

Using a torque wrench rotate the axle shaft (4234) . Be sure that the transmission is in neutral, one rear wheel is on the floor, and the other rear wheel is raised off the floor. The breakaway torque required to start rotation should be at least 27 Nm (20 ft-lb). The initial break-away torque may be higher than the continuous turning torque, but this is normal. The axle shaft should turn with even torque throughout the check without slipping or binding. If the torque reading is less than specification, service the differential .

I have rebuilt mine 2x's already. Its annoying. Im just gettign a locker and leaving it alone.

update:

well one of my dads drinking buddys, worked for ford back in the day, said that if i do some fig 8s then back a few times it might fix it. Or they ar ejust making fun of me.

2nd i found a ebay link for a 31 spline limited slip, how many splines do i have? and how hard would that be to put on?

and is a jeep d35 rear end the same as my d35 front? If so a front locker for a jeep rear will fit my front? right?

Some d35 lockers for Jeeps will fit the front end. Do a search, it was explained very detailed in a couple of threads. BTW, your 8.8 has 31 spline and a 7/8" shaft (mustangs have 3/4" shaft)
