2000 Ford Ranger XLT
Hey fellas! I was wondering if anyone could help me with swapping the 5.0 out of a 2000 explorer into a 2000 ranger xlt? I wish I could do it on my own but I don’t currently own a garage to do this in. I know it’s pretty straight forward and I’d be willing to help whoever can do it. Obviously willing to pay cash for the swap. Anyone interested in the Central NJ area? Here are the vehicles in question.

2000 ford ranger XLT 3.0 2wd

2000 ford explorer Eddie Bauer 5.0 awd

I’d like to swap the 5.0 into the ranger along with the seats and center console. I’d also like to keep it 2wd. I believe the awd box is just bolted on to the back of the 4r70 so that’s simple enough.

yes the transfer case is bolted onto the back of the trans but the tailshaft housing is different and im 99.99999% sure the output shaft of the trans is also different so it would require a full teardown to replace.

It is indeed different but not something I can’t tackle. Unfortunately up here in the northeast 2wd 5.0’s are scarce. Worst comes to worse I’ll just have to snag a 2wd 4r70w from a yard or eBay.

The issue still remains though of find someone that can do this for me in my area. I can’t wait to finally get my own garage 😭

The 2wd Ranger chassis has a unique engine mounting issue to address.
Yes, it will require indoor space with a service lift and some special tools to get started.
410fortune has started a 5.0 conversion on a 2wd chassis and I have started collecting parts to convert my 1999 3.0
to 5.0 keeping it 2wd.
You at the very least and maybe more parts, need an output shaft and tail shaft housing to convert your AWD 4R70W to 2wd application.

I was able to scoop up a 2wd 4r70w out of a 1999 5.0 explorer this morning! I was looking for tail housings but I came across a whole trans for 300, I had no choice but to buy it! I’m sure my wife will enjoy that excuse.

Anyways, what exact mounting issue do you mean? Is it a subframe issue? I can’t see why it isn’t anything I can’t pull/cut out of my donor Explorer.

Because the 3.0 ranger is coil spring and has a complete different frame and engine cradle

The Explorer is torsion spring and again has a complete different frame and engine cradle

It can be done and will be done but it by no means a simple bolt in conversion
Fabrication and aftermarket parts are required, more then the normal torsion bar to torsion bar ranger conversions

Ahh okay, I knew the suspension was different up front but I did not know it completely changed up all the mounting points.

Thank you guys for all the juicy info! @410Fortune

Mounting points for engine mounts and fitment of the oil pan

I started to convert a 2000 3.0 coil spring ranger in my shop back in October… we got as far as getting ready to drip the drivers coil spring for access to the 3.0 engine mount. And then I had to out this project aside for a while… she’s still in the shop and has been put on the back burner for a bit
I have some other pressing priorities
But when it happens I will document it

There is very very little information about putting the explorer gt40 drivetrain into one of these rangers on the internet

That’s okay
I’ve never let that stop me
We/ I am considered one of the pioneers in this world of ranger based vehicles

I did a 2.9 to 4.0 way before they were a “thing”

I converted my truck to v8 and ob2’electrics way before any other examples were available and I still see sooooo
Many misconceptions out there about these swaps it’s hilarious

My friend Brett (with a little help from me) was one of the first to run a sohc v6 with the ohv computer

I’m still Pioneering things like converting a 98 ranger to use a 04 sohc drivetrain without swapping the entire truck over to 04

Like installing the Dakota digital speedometer interface into these converted trucks to make the factory cluster happy

Like deleting the factory abs system and convincing the truck it’s still there

Like converting a 07 ranger to a v8 and using the Holley terminator pcm and the factory distributor less ignition while wiring the truck side of things backwards to have a functioning dash

Just to name a few :)
