Longevity of Ford Products?

I am new to Ford products. I just purchased an '02 XLS 4X4 with 60K miles. With regular scheduled maintenance and good care (I tend to pamper vehicles as best as possible), what kind of life can I expect? I purchased an extended warranty (additional 5yr/100K) that will cover me for well past the loan. Not to compare apples and oranges, I own a '92 BMW 325i and it has 250,413 miles on it and still purrs. I got the Expl. because I want to garage the BMW and just use her for weekends/short drives.

I don't know about the explorers yet (just bought mine), but I own an 89 ranger I bought new. It has 182,000 very rough miles on it (so far). It runs fine, but I ditched the garbage A4LD (automatic) transmission after the 3rd rebuild. It has a C5 and works fine now.

I just bought my Explorer recently as well, but I'm in a big Ford family. That being said, I think almost all cars will last decades if given the proper care. When you start to have problems is when the cars are neglected and not kept up or parts get hard to find. In my never-humble opinion Fords are no better or worse than any other car as far as longevity is concerned. Its how you drive it and take care of it that matters.

I bought an American truck cause I assumed it would last till the sun went out - and to be fair after 60k I don't have any particular complaints.

The brakes don't last long 10K front pads, 20K rear, 20K front rotors, 40K rears and don't get me started on those Firestones, but the Goodyear AP replacements are lasting (1mm per 10K) though they don't grip too good.

Battery and exhaust both deep sixed but I do a lot of short distances.

I expect the engine to be still going when the lights go out. Cast in Canada, machined in Germany, assembled in US!

I just hit 100k in my X last weekend, she still purrs just as she did when I go her a few years ago at 62k. (Except for the 5.0 Explorer tick, which I don't really mind!)

My 88 has 280K miles on it

They are some of the most reliable vehicles you can buy, especially when you take care of them. 100K is just getting warmed up........

mine has about mine is approaching 140,000 miles...after a tranny rebuild and the normal old car things (radiator, bearings, tires, etc) it still purrs..mine has a slight ps fluid leak right now but not bad at all. As far as the engine...i wouldn't trade my 4.0 for any engine, great little mill, the sohc's are also quite good, and the v8 is extremely good as well

I know a guy that did nothing except change oil in his 1981 F-series pickup. It was a farm truck, that saw work every day. He got 300,000 miles out of the original drivetrain. It would have lasted longer except he forgot to change the oil one time...

I have owned, or had friends that owned:
76 Bronco, sold (sob sob a travesty) with 180,000 on it
84 Bronco II, sold with 150000 mi on it
85 Bronco II, sold with 185,000 on it
86 Ranger 4 banger stick, sold with 205,000 on it
89 Bronco II still going strong at 240,000 (albeit with a 4.0 in it now...)
93 Explorer XLT, still going strong with 155,000 mi
94 Explorer Sport, just gettin broken in with 111,000 mi

Dam I wish I had that 76 right about now...friend sold it about 1992. I should have snapped it up...

if you take care of them they last forever, but ofcourse there always some lemons with any manufacturer, but not many.

My uncle had an 82 ranger which he drove the crap out of and never did anything to take care of it and it lasted him 22 years until the body rusted so bad body panels started to fall off. He never washed it and i remember one moment my grandpa checked the oil and there was none on the dipstick, so they can take alot before they die. The only thing he replaced major was the clutch and the seats cause he got butt burns all over em

Just kidding. My X just hit 40,000 miles, has all original equipment and runs great. My father in law had a 96 V8 mounty w/ 276,000 that still pulled strong and traded it in on a V6 2002 Xplorer. To be honest there is no way I would trade w/ him, the 5.0 is awsome!!

im approaching 230000 on all original trany and engine so i guess that says something just take care of it and you will be happy

I just hit 120,000 all original parts and I'm the second ower so, take of it and you'll be set.

I agree, if you take care of and maintain your vehicle it will last for a long time. Just like anything else, if you don't take care of it, it'll die a horrible death.

I grew up in a GM family with my Dad working for GM. I'm still a GM man when it comes to cars but my Dad always liked Ford trucks for some reason.In fact he died owning a ford truck. So I bought my first Ford,(91 explorer), a little over a year ago. It's got 280000km onit and still running strong. I love it!!!!!!

My family has 2 explorers my mom has a 93 xlt she bought it brand new and it has had very few problems. We just recently put in a new clutch the original clutch had 130000 miles on it now it has about 140000 miles. The only other problem was an intake gasket leak. My 92 xlt now has 123000 miles and it still runs and looks like brand new. The only problem with the 92 is an oil leak that i cant seem to find where its coming from.

That's not a good sign. Anyone who does maintain their vehicle reasonably well will absolutely have a service log and/or receipts. I'd recommend you get a trusted local mechanic to do a full inspection.

60K miles isn't a huge number... but put on in 2 or 3 years it's not trivial. My 1998 Explorer doesn't even have 60K on it.

Well, I didn't think it was a major issue that it didn't have any records with it considering it was purchased from a used car dealer. (A nationwide, reputable store) My wife also purchased an '02 Explorer from Carmax and it didn't include any service records. Both of our SUVs are in great shape and the engine is running sweet.
