Making an explorer FWD?

So as some of you know I'm in the market for new second-gen and I ran across this ad today and I just wonder what the heck was done to this car and how easy it would be to convert back. I spoke with the lady and she really has no clue, part of me wonders if she just didn't know the terminology The ad says

"It was originally AWD but the transfer case went out, so the mechanic made it FWD so that we didn't have to buy a new transfer case at the time. If you want to purchase a transfer case, we still have the parts to make it AWD again."

This is a 97 mountaineer with the 5.0 it is sub 1k Just wondering if it would be worth it or not. My old mounty was a 99 with the v6

my guess is the front driveshaft has been removed and they meant to say RWD

Yeah there were other issues with at as well. The ac is out and needs new tires. Going to check it out saturday and another one that is 500 bucks but it is the V6 I liked my 6 fine just wanted a little more towing power but meh for 500 I'd be fine with it that one needs

Honestly a 4406 swap isn't that involved and I think you'll be very pleased with the results.

I know right,

I did mine and cat back system and new fuel pump in a week end. And the 4406 and drive shafts only cost me $100 from the junk yard....best $100 I ever spent!

i think your right , but without that front driveshaft when vehicle is in park will move , must apply emergency brakes every time when parking vehicle

I drove mine for almost a year without the front drive shaft and it never moved.

I wonder if it has something to do with how the AWD unit breaks because mine parked perfect.

My 96 Ford explore XLT AWD 5.0 4 Door (Not 4x4) I removed my front driveshaft. And when I parked on a hill it always mover very very slowly , I had to engage emergency brakes every time when parked

I know, that's what people say but mine never moved.

swigin if you parked on a steep enough hill it would move
They do indeed park through the front and rear driveshaft, with no front it will roll...slowly, backwards, down a hill...................your 98 is no different then the other 96-01 AWD t cases

Unless the VC was burned and locked up. Then it would hold a hill.

I had it on plenty of hills parked, it would not move. I think they can break differently and some drift and some don't.

I'd rather the V8 but I am in an apartment and they have already given me notices about my behavior that disturbs other residents (changing oil, replacing spark plugs, etc) It is in my lease that I am not allowed to work on cars here and I think they would notice me out there with a grinder! Though I did do that to replace the fuel pump in my mounty instead of dropping the tank. LOL they did not care for that. I can't wait to own my own home.
