Matt's '92/'99 4X4 V8/4R70W swap!

Good question. The Ford cam end play has never been a problem, likely because the sprocket controls the movement well. There never were roller bearing parts behind timing chains for Fords, until recently I found out. Now they are much more common, they seem to start around $90.

What I'm really saying is that that end play has never been a big issue in building a Ford. If some new parts that can cause issues are now available it may be something to worry about, but I doubt it. If you have that proper tiny end play with the sprocket on, and the alignment is right, I'd be comfortable installing it as you have it.

You always carefully inspect all parts, how they line up with all others around it. Do that and if things move freely and there is no odd play anywhere, I think that you are good.

I studied the design and realized that the sprocket is essential in Positioning and bearing the camshaft so my manual was mistaken.

Yes, there are many more parts choices these days, but the timing set is still fairly easy.

piston rings take forever.

Great. One of my rod journals is very f@$&ed up.

It's gonna have to be turned. And I'll have to order new bearings.

What's that you say? Doesn't my vacation, and the swap, start next week?

Why yes, Mr. Anonymous questioner. It does.

Any good shop can do that in a timely manner. I would have them get the bearings as well so they match the new size. It'll save you time as well. If they've had your crank for a while, I would hope they can have this done ASAP. Otherwise, unless they are a really good place to deal with, I'd look at another place for any future work.
Are your hoping to have the engine assembled prior to the start of your swap, or is that a part of your vacation to-do list?

I was assembling the engine when I discovered the damage.

Dam good thing I went through and checked all the bearings again before I torqued down the rod bolts.

Looks like I took a rod bolt, layed it on the journal, and then hit it a few times with a f$&@in three pound sledge. Rediculous.

Phew...

Machinist says he can polish it out. 25$.

Sounds like things are starting to come together for that motor! Exciting! We need pictures, I want to see what this thing is looking like :D

And sounds like a good deal with your machinist there, are you going to get new bearings from him too? Or will you still have to order them?

Nah I still have one pair of bearing Shells left. I ordered an extra set.

So I'll see if they still fit well when I get the crank back. Otherwise I'll have to order one pair at .001 undersize.

I'll put up some pics tonight. I'll show you the bearing that was on the flawed journal. Talk about trashed. And that's just from me spinning the crank by hand.

It's lookin good. Once I get the springs installed on the heads I'll throw it all together for a mock up picture.

But the intake won't to on for good until the engines in the car.

sorry guys the crap is hittin the fan and I've been forgetting to post pictures.
will try tonight.

Looks like i lost a hand in that timing chain doesn't it?

Holy crap!!! That is great looking, brings a tear to my eye

It looks like you've retarded the cam a little there. Refresh my memory, was there a reason for that with the cam you selected? Most "off the shelf" cams made these days are designed for straight up installs for best performance of HP&torque. Just wondering. I've always had best setup and performance degreeing the cam straight up. You may get a tad more HP but you're going to sacrifice more of the good stuff... torque.

Jon I'm guessing you mean the 4 brown plastic things that I took out at dissassembly. I still have them just haven't gotten to puttin the litters n yet.

No WW, it's strait up. It's not aLligned in that picture. That as aver I turns it around a few times to check for binding.

My dad should pick up the crank today. Then it reassemble it tonight. And start on the rest of the assembly.

Ordered my new radiator.

Had to pick up some valve locks.

And drive my freind around for a week cause of his POS dodge.

Good to know. Have fun and take your time. You don't want to get it all together and find yourself saying "did I torque the last main cap bolt or not".
