I went out and bought a set of Rancho 5000's and was gonna install them tonight but when I took them out of the box they were compressed with no band to keep them from extending.

All the shocks I have ever bought, including the Rancho 9000XL's had the plastic/metal band/strap to keep them compressed until you install them.

I had to pull the shocks to extend them and then it only took minimal effort to compress them, this usually is how you tell a shock is worn out, what gives?

I don't wanna tear the old blown out shocks off until I have good new shocks to use.

Everyone says the 5000's are a stiffer ride and if this is how they come then they're a stiffer ride because their bottoming out all the time, lol.

That is how they are. Not sure why, something to do with the type of shock it is i guess. Don't worry you didn't get a bad set. I like the ride my ex has with the 5000s.

Did you wear out the 9000s you had on there? How many miles did you put on them?

Rancho 5000's, new but won't extend on there own, are they bad????

I sold the 9000XL's and wireles remote system to another member awhile back. I think they had around 26k miles on them and still had tons of life in them (the rears did, the front shocks were broken fronm too many hard hits from the potholes around here).

The shocks don't have any resistance to compress them, all the shocks I've bought in the past took both arms with full force to compress them. How do these hold the weight of the truck if they are compressed and don't extend by themselves????

RS5000s are not nitrogen gas pressurized (and is why they don't self-extend).

They're OK shocks, but if you want performance and a firm but smooth ride, I would suggest getting some Bilsteins instead.

hey rebel, when i got mine and was installing them i had the same thoughts. so much so that i called rancho and asked them what the deal was. they told me that they dont come with the little bands. what you have to do is extend them yourself manually, and then "exercise them" meaning expand and contract them a few times by hand. then just put them on. i havent had any problems with them since. good luck!

O.k., thanks guys.

Lono, if you do that too much you'll go blind, maybe you shoot put the red boot on first for safety.

i think its the way the valves work in the 5Ks it seems weird but my buddys came that way too and thats for a frontier

Ya, Lono said you have to compress and extend the valve a couple times and it'll extend out. Sounds kinda personal to me, lol.

Thanks Turdle.

yup, some people say i might have a problem with that. safety first though, i slapped the red boot on first!

for the money, you are really going to enjoy the ranchos. i was just up in the sierra mountains a few weeks ago on a really bumpy trail thinking, "dang, i cant believe these only cost me 110 bucks!"
