Mirror damage

This is what happens when you are in the middle lane and a bus on your left that has not seen you decides to change into your lane.
My first reaction was just to get out of the way and a van coming the other way at about 85mph hit the mirror.

My dealership say I have to order a whole new mirror unit, but do you think I could just order the glass? They say that’s not available for the explorer.

i would try an auto glass shop. i bet they could get you just the "glass" part.

performance products has replacement OE mirrors which start at $63.95 (i guess it gets more expensive if theyre heated, power, etc.) though, i dont think theyre the same ones youll get from ford - they look the same, theyre just an "aftermarket" mirror, maybe a lil lower quality, but im sure theyre a lot cheaper. just a suggestion - i dont know if you really care about having an original ford mirror.

maybe you could also try a junkyard.

I tried this with my GF's Toyota truck and soon realized that it was a futile exercise. Two factors make finding a junkyard mirror difficult: 1. A lot of them get destroyed in the accident that put the car in the junkyard and 2. The few remaining ones get snapped up quickly by others who are also looking to save money.

Looks to me like the hinge is broken, so just glass won't do. Also, there are some little conectors that attache to the back of the glass holder that aren't there. Grab your other mirror and pull it off to see what the missing parts are.
