Hi All! Happy Holidays....

Sometimes, especially when the weather is a little colder. It takes several tries to start the truck.

I turn the key to the on position several time before I hear the Fuel Pump hum...then it will start fine....

I can hear the relay clicking. Also, did a full tune-up last month. No CEL, and Passed smog last week :D

Any ideas... maybe a bad ignition?

You may not be hearing the fuel pump relay, there are several other relays and sensors that will click and hum when you turn the key to "on"

I would CHANGE the relay first and have a look at the wiring connections where it plugs in (sometimes the wires get pushed down or corroded or both)

If it still does it then I would say yes it is very likely your fuel pump is on its way out, BUT you can easily check for + at the pump wires when the key is turned to verify its not the wiring.

Usually they get weak then quit, when the truck is warm does it happen more often?

Also,
You might notice if the "check engine" light illuminates with the first time you switch it on.

The PCM relay also clicks on at this point, and no PCM power =no fuel pump power. In other words, 2 relays need to "click on" .

ding ding beep wrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr fffffffffffffffffffff ding ding ding

Ah the ol Gen II start up song

The one thing I don't understand is..... when the weather is warmer it does not have this problem. Only when the weather drops below 65.

The last few days the weather has been in the 80's, and no problem starting....

I'm soooo confused. LOL

....Where are you located so we could rule out some other possibilities???

Which engine is in your explorer?
On a cold morning, try this just to humor me-and rule out the fuel pump.

Cycle the key on and off about 4 times, with a 2-3 second pause while on each time.
On the 5th switch on, go ahead and try to crank the engine.

If it starts right away it would ( to me anyway) indicate a fuel pressure issue. may be a bad fuel pump, or, maybe the fuel sock is clogged and gelled up? Maybe a clogged fuel filter?

The technician way to troubleshoot this would be to attach a fuel pressure gauge before the cold morning start-and watch the fuel pressure. The method above will be an easy way to determine if you need to go to the trouble, maybe?
