2002 Explorer Sport Trac
I have an 02 2wd ST pre-runner in the works. Its has a camburg 6.0 lift already, but it really needs gears. Im running 285/75/16's on all four corners. I dont know what size axles this thing comes with, and what gear to go with. The data tag has been removed. I do know its an open diffy. I want good bottom end, better mid range, and some freeway. I was thinking a 4.30's if its made, but it looks like i will end up with 4.56's. I want to go with a detroit locker. I just need advise on gearing. Its gonna be a daily driver and a desert runner.
A friend suggested the Lock Right. And due to the lack of horsepower, I cant see us breaking the diffy carrier with a Lock Right.

Your Trac will have either 3.73 or 4.10 gears stock depending on what size tires it came with originally.
With 33" tires, 4.56 gears will put the rpm vs. mph pretty close to stock. If you want a bit more power you could step up to 4.88's.
Your Trac has a 31 spline 8.8" Ford rear axle. A Detroit Locker is probably your best choice. The Lock Right is a lunchbox locker, cheaper and easier to install, but not quite as strong. The Powertrax No-Slip is very good also and smoother on the street than a Detroit.

I run an open 4.10 with no issue. But go ahead and bump it up to 4.56s. Locker wise there are tons of lockers to choose from for the 8.8. I really want an arb but that's 980 out the door so I may need to settle for a Detroit. Any sort of lunchbox is clearly going to be cheaper like Aussie. They have one for like 250 or 300 bucks but then again it's engaged all the time. I'd like to have something I can switch on or off. Just my .02

Thanks fellas. That helped a ton. I didnt know what the rpm's should be at freeway apeeds of around 70ish with the OD on, and I was guessing on the 4.56's. That sounds like the hot ticket. Thanks again.

im running a 2wd trac with 4.10 gearing and it gets by, but if youre gonna switch gears 4.56 would be the ticket. lunchbox lockers arent always engaged, they open up when you arent on the gas pedal, like when you are making a turn. my aussie lockers are awesome and i really recommend them. check out my registry link in my signature. it sounds like you are going for a set up similar to me.
