I just finished installing new tensioners and guides in my 98 4.0 sohc. Starts up and runs great. I still hear a little bit of a tick. And a tiny bit on start up. Every once in a while, the noise will go away. Then come back. It sounds like chain on the plastic guide. One of the techs said to run a slightly thicker oil like 10w-30 with some lucus to help the oil stay on the guides. I did clean the engine out with deisel so its possible some is still in the engine and thinned the oil.
