Just replaced the driver side CV axle, and now I have this squeaking sound which turns into a kind of whirring noise from 1 to 25mph.. It's like if you wet your finger and drag it across a window noise. Install went fine, torqued the axle nut to 180ft lbs, the diff side popped into place at the correct depth.

When I jacked up the front end and slowly rotated the axles I thought it was the boots bellows rubbing on each other. So then I put both A-arms under jack stands to drop the suspension down to its ride height. I spun the tire and the noise is coming from where the CV rests in side of the knuckle, up against the wheel bearing. On a whim I shot a spray of silicone lube at it while turning it. And it immediately made the noise disappear. Course after a few miles it came right back.. Not sure what's going on. Haven't had time to pull it apart again. It's like the CV of the rubber on the end? Is chafing the hub, knuckle, or outer part of the wheel bearing where it doesn't spin.

The noise wasn't there before replacing the CV with the disintegrated boot. Wheel bearing felt snug, smooth, no noise.

It’s that seal where the new cv axle rubs on the back of the wheel bearing
Did you clean that area really well and lube it with grease?

The new seal will wear itself in and the noise will go away.
The aftermarket cv axles are known for this

Keep an ear on it but I bet it goes away when the new seal disintegrates …
Nothing to worry about in that case, it’s pretty common that dust seal is not exactly “needed”
As the wheel bearings are a sealed unit

Awesome, thanks. Basically confirmed everything I thought. I did not grease the area since it's a sealed bearing. Unlike tapered jeep/solid axle stuff. I did clean and blow it out quite well though.

I did not knowing this was a common thing. That makes me feel alot better, lol. I figured it'd self clearance after awhile.

Well it's been like 1000 miles now and this damn thing is till squealing. Only after the vehicle and parts warm up though. It's Embarrassing pulling into my neighborhood

Weird. Mine had like a rhythmic chirp when new, ended up settling in.

Honestly, idk. This was years ago. I really noticed it driving next to a concrete barrier or wall at low speed with the windows down.

I think mine may have been the lips on the seals at the diff though, now that I think about it…not the cv axles, sorry.

My memory isn’t what it used to be
