no first gear until moving?

hey guys im a newbie searched but haven't seen others with this exact problem. have a 92 explorer with a a4ld i believe. I try to shift into OD, D, or 1, i get nothing, shift into 2 it moves fine then if i manually shift into OD while moving it shifts up no problem no slippage at all. also R works fine which i believe is 1 just spinning the other way. any ideas?

Well you have no first gear. Since you still have reverse I'd say mechanically your still sound but definitely a problem in the valve body.

I was told by a good shop that it was probably a broken sprag and needs a rebuild not sure if anyone else had this problem before
