O/D light flashing,code646

Hello, I have a 95 explorer that will not shift out of 1st gear unless I back off the throttle. The O/D light is flashing and has a computer code 646 (gear 2 ratio fault). The problem developed suddenly and has never had any problems prier. I dropped the pan and fluid was a little dark but not terrible. The pan had a very light film and magnet had very small amount of sludge built up, no metal shavings or any other foreign material.
The vehicle has 88k miles on it and I am unsure of the prier maintenance,have only owned for 6m. I have read other threads suggesting adjusting intermediate band and possible VB rebuild. does anybody think I would benefit from doing this or does it sound like I'm doomed? Also is there an posted procedure for adjusting bands?

yes by all means adjust intermediate band it sounds just like a band problem and this is always the cheapest fix if it works let us know ?

I saw this before in this tread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152122&highlight=code+646 The band is adjusted by loosening the lock nut, tightening the adjuster stud with a torque wrench to 10 foot pounds, backing it off 2 turns, then tightening the lock nut.
