That's an extra filter for the trans, the cooler is just inboard of that. For my project SUV, I'm going to place oil filters in those spots(one a "bypass" filter), and external filters for the ATF on the right frame rail.

Mine is mounted on the firewall next to the radiator drivers side, I also put my arb compressor above it on the same side. This is in a bii, very tight on space
For the hose routing this space is a natural fit keeping the lines short and out of harms way.

I use the canton billet puck that can be rotated any direction
