Has anyone changed their oil pump with the engine still in the X?

You have to pull the motor on the OHV equipped Explorers to change the oil pump. The frame cross member won't allow the pan to be pulled with the engine still installed.

For petes sack I hope mine never goes bad! Has anyone had one go out on them?

My mother-in-law's 91 broke one and took the motor with it :( . The pressure spring broke, which in turn dropped the oil pressure to the motor and eventually killed the motor. Since the X has a fake oil pressure gauge, she didn't notice that it was low on oil pressure.

Didnt she notice the moter knockin to beat hell:eek:

Ummmmm, no. Actually, she was getting a LOT of lifter clatter on start up, not a bottom end knock. She was getting enough pressure to keep the gauge happy most of the time, but not enough to properly oil the motor. The top end is what finally gave out. I'm guessing it took a couple of years for the motor to quit from the time the spring in the pump broke.

That shows you how tough the 4.0 is:)

I appreciate the input. My Oil pump is out right now.I just bought the vehicle and thought it just needed a new set of lifters and all that good stuff, so much to my amazment I put it all back together and it just kept on clattering away! I was reading good oil pressure the whole time, so I did a test and found that I have NO oil pressure. now I need to replace the pump!

keep us posted on how you are coming along and how hard it is:D

Check out the new post about my Oil pump in "under the hood"

how would someone install a real oil pressure guage if the factory one is a fluke?

you just unbolt your oil sending unit from below the A/C compresser and bolt up your new guage, that simple, that how I found out that my pump was actaully out

I want to put a digital oil pressure gauge on my 98 SOHC. Where is a good place to put the sending unit? Where is the stock sending unit? I have to leave that on there because I think that sends info to the computer but I might be able to put a T on it or something.
