What are my options to fix a burned out rectangular type fog light in my '97 Explorer? It looks like the bulbs are integrated and therefore the whole assembly needs to be replaced. Is Ford the way to go, or something else??

twist and pull the bulbs will come out if they are stock

otherwise you can pull the stock light buckets and attach a $20 light set from your local store to the stock brackets (hole will need to be driled and wires will need to be spliced)

check the chrome on the inside, more than likely if they burned out water got in and screwed up the chrome, if this happened you need to replace the lights any light you replace them with I would suggest you seal them with silicone or plumbers goop

the stock lights are $120 and not worth it

I'll check that out...on a quick look/feel it appeared that the bulbs were integrated. The burned out side does have condensation inside and the chrome seems dark, so I think you're right about water intrusion being the cause.

Also check eBay, once in a while the stockers show up cheap. I bought a set of new factory Ford lights with bulbs for $40 shipped. Not one of the constant relist auctions though.

The bulb is replaceable if it's a stock unit. It's nothing fancy or exotic.

However, if there's condensation inside and the reflector is brown, it's time for a new one. Mine were replaced when they were about 5 years old or so... After they burnt out and leaked again, I abandoned them in place. Since the OEM fog lights are about useless anyways, I added a set of 150-watt KC Daylighters and never looked back.

If you are in the market for new fog lights. I just replaced my fog lights cause someone stole them when I had my truck parked on a "secure" lot while I was overseas. I went to harbor freight tools and bought a pair of fog lights (there were two I got the amber lens one that said fog lights on the package). I used the existing metal brackets because the robber stole only the fog lights and the new ones turned out really nice. If you want some pictures and a procedure, I can post it. The job only took 30 minutes. Well 30 minutes included the time it took to figure out how to mount it and wire it. It should be half that with a procedure. By the way, I didn't drill any holes, I did have to splice some wires.

Bring it on! I'd love to see how it turned out. What type of scumbag steals foglights?? I agree that the stockers don't do much at all, so no great loss I suppose.

Here is the finished product, which I think no one can deny that it looks good and that it looks OEM. If you go on the Harbor Freight website they are different from the ones I got. The foglights have 55 watt Halogen bulbs, the lens are glass and hey for 18 bucks they work and look good. Like I said, I didn't drill any holes. So this job was a piece of cake. Anyways if you are going to go that route, I can tell you how to do it and by the time you reply, it will be dark so I can show you what they look like at night.

I don't really care that those scumbags stole my foglights. They were getting water inside the assembly, shorting out the bulbs, and the plastic lens started to look like crap. I guess I can say they were doing me a favor by taking those POS foglights off my hands. :) LOL

That looks real sharp. Definitely a step up from the stockers. You got a winner there.

Well to start the guide, you will need to remove the foglight brackets. You will need a 10mm socket (because the corresponding SAE sockets were rounding off the bolt head) and about a 10" Extension to reach the two bolts that holds the brackets. Watch out, there are washers on the bolts, and there are metal clips for each bolt. Then you want to remove the wiring harness (I removed it because it was cold outside so I brought everything in to work on it), if you want to.

There are the metal clips still intact.

Camera didn't want to focus on the connector cause it liked the driveway better. There is a clip on the connector that must be pushed down to be removed. But it is the connector that goes to the truck.

The harness has already been removed as seen in the picture.

So the foglight mounting bracket on the foglight itself needs to be rotated so that the bolt is facing the back of the foglight. The lens will need to be rotated because it will be on the bottom of the foglight, which is really simple to do. Just remove the two screws and prevent the glass lens from falling out.

This shows one of the side black screws on the side and the mounting bracket rotated to the back.

So I used a longer bolt then the one that came with the foglights. Because an extra nut and a few washers is used to move the foglight forwards otherwise there will be a gap between the foglight and the bumper.

This shows the nut and a large washer.

Then on the other side of the bracket make sure the bolt is at the top and the center from side to side of the square hole. Then to secure it, put on a large washer, locking washer, and a nut. Make sure it is tight because you don't want it to move. Make sure to have the wire out of one of the other holes. I chose the back hole but I may move it so that it is coming out of the top hole. Position the foglights so that it points as far down as possible.

You don't have to put the foglight back on the truck. But this picture shows the wire coming out the back hole and also secured with the necessary hardware.

I chose to remove the old plug and put in my own connectors. I think you may be able to remove the plug that is coming from your old foglights and use it on your new ones. Otherwise you will need to cut off the end that goes to the foglight on the wiring harness and put in some new connectors. Just don't cut off the end that has a red gasket. The other side should have a yellow gasket. Now I don't know if Halogen bulbs are polarized, I am assuming it doesn't matter. But just in case, I installed the connector in such a way that I can reverse them if it doesn't work without having to cut off the connector and putting in another one.

Here is with the new connectors.

Finally you can install the foglights back onto the truck if you haven't done so already and plug the foglights back in. Now test the foglights and enjoy. More pictures to come with the foglights in action.

Wow, great description. Now I get it. Congrats on post #7!

As you indicated, I couldn't match your lights at harborfreight. Could you measure the general dimensions of yours, and do you know the bulb wattage for future reference?

I vote this for a sticky....

I did basically the same with mine. Aftermarket are alot brighter than the stock ones, plus if you try to remove the stock ones, the clips will most likely break and you will have a hole in the plastic casing.

Video with inside the truck with and without foglights

Here is a approximate measurement of the foglights. I didn't take out the foglights. It is 6 inches wide, 3.5 inches high, and it is 2.5 inches deep. It is important to find one that allows you to rotate the mount. Also you would want the mount to be up high rather than the middle of the foglight. It is a 55 watt halogen bulb I believe. Yeah i guess Harbor Freight went with a different brand or it varies from store to store.
