ok so I've had a few posts up about my truck at 40 mph shifting down to about 1k and then shuttering upon acceleration... i was told by a transmission shop and by a few people here on the site that it was my torque converter.... so after a grueling weekend i changed out dropped my transmission and replaced my torque converter... put new transmission fluid in and drained and refilled my transfer case... and took it the truck for a spin... and yea its doing the same damn thing... im just about out of ideas... could it be the TPS?? coil packs?? some other sensor that im not thinking about... any advice will be greatly appreciated

2000 5.0 v8 awd

thanks in advance

Shuttering is hard to give an answer for unless you can actually feel it. Could be an engine problem but hard to say. Does it only happen at around 1k RPM?

when accelerating from a stop, it takes off and shifts fine... although i did notice once in a while that the truck seems to have a hard time going above 2k when accelerating quickly from a stop. but if driving, flat roads, hills especially, when reaching 40 mph the truck wants to shift, when it does it drops to about 1k thats when the shutter feeling starts. if i try and gas out of it i can because the truck shifts up, but then it will just shift down again with in a few sec and start the shutter all over. i have felt it at differant speeds and rpms when trying to go up hills, but no where near as bad as when cruising and reaching the 40 mph mark.... and to boot im not throwing any check engine lights... i was thinking it might be the tps telling the pcm that im taking my foot off the gas and causing the truck to basicly choke it self out.. but i figured if the tps was bad id throw a code...

Have you checked the TPS voltage?

I had one go bad on the Mountaineer and it wouldn't let it upshift. No codes at all. At this point it's worth a shot. Seems like the torque converter is locking too soon, which could happen if the TPS voltage was very low.

no i havent checked yet i just finished putting it all together tonight took it for its test drive and with much disappointment I'm still stuck with this problem.... what about the 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoids? ive read that oem ones were made of aluminum, and they had problems with them and there now made of rubber... just a though..maybe?

With hindsight being 20/20 of course...You mighta shoulda have changed out your valve body and solenoid block..just to be safe!!

Good news being that you don't have to drop for those swaps..and only a couple quarts of fluid to replace..

So the truck is prematurely going into Over Drive? Thats what it sounds like... Have you tried to drive it with the O/D shut off?

ok so i think i fixed it... i put in a new tps.. and that did nothing.. then looking at the spark plug wires i noticed on was against the manifold and was burnt a bit... so i replaced the wires and the coil packs, and its not shuttering anymore.... the rpms still dip lower then it seems they should, but it seems to be running better now... not sure if the wore was arching out or if the coil was bad but something seemed to fix it for now. thanks for all the hep guys... i really appreciate the input you shared. -Ross-

Engine RPM in OD with converter locked depends on your axle ratio, if it is a 3.55 it will be about 500 less that a 4.10 ratio. A 3.55 will be around 2000 RPM or under at 60mph. I see it almost everyday but can't remember for sure exactly what it is.

yeah thats about where mine is at 40 its is around 1k maybe a little higher, and is deff under 2k at 60.... so i guess it is where its supposed to be...
