Painting undercarraige questions..

OK I was thinking today.. I want to paint the undercarraige of my truck (kinda rusty and dull). On my old truck I used rustolem spray paint and that worked good for about 4 months then went back to crap. I Want to herculine but thats a little expensive. Anyone ever think of using like driveway tar? Not the stuff with grits in it but the smooth stuff? I would brush it on. Its like 12$ for a 5 gallon bucket! I like that pricing. Anyone have any input?

boomin why not try the rubberized under coating? its like 3-4 a can...i think they have it so you can brush it on..not sure though...i'm gonna keep an eye on this thread i have been thinking about this as well...

I recently painted my undercarriage with rubberized paint that I picked up at Checker for $1.99 a can. It took about 3 cans.

Would that treat the rust that is already there? I have heard that some chemicals reacts differently with rust and speeds up the rust process. That is why some just recommend to just leave it alone if it is not done professionally or unsure if you're doing it correctly.

I had a similar thread on this with little help. I hope you get better result with this one.

I have seen too many people do this on old Mustangs and then wonder why their floors rotted out a few years later. IMO, you're creating more problems for yourself down the road. If you want to make it look nice, I'd hit the floors as best you can with a wire wheel and then use spray paint. Yeah this doesn't last as long but it also won't seal in any moisture and cause rot.

Unless you but a paint system that takes care of the rust automatically, you gotta get rid of the rust before your paint it. Other wise the rust keeps eating away at the metal under the nice cozy blanket of paint you gave it.

I dont have any rust at all so I should be fine. I live in a dry environment and have a rust-free vehicle.

If you're gonna paint it, try Rust-O-Leum hammercoat paint. It works great on undercarriages, axles, etc. I put it on my truck and it has held up quite well.

It's no thicker than regular paint, available as both a spray and a paint on. The spray cans (available at Wal-Mart) are around $3-4 each.

If you really want it to last, POR15 is the only way to go. Expensive though.
