Hi I'm new to this forum. I just got a 96 X Sport 2 days ago. And I have been looking for some info on this site. I have found a lot of helpful things but not what I,m looking for. I guess it doesn't help that I suck at searching. Well what I was wondering is has anybody tried putting a 98+ rear hatch on a 97 or lower? I know you would have to change the taillights but would the door bolt up if you did that? And the other thing. Has anyone done ha turn signal mod so that all 3 lights on the front blink not just the 2 lights? Well thanks for looking.

Thanks that helps a bit. know that I know this does anyone know what kind of trimming I would have to do to get it to work.

On a 96, you shouldn't have to do any trimming. The biggest thing is that the wiring is different for the hatch, it has some wiring for the license plate lights, since the plate is mounted on the hatch. The taillights are different, but they should interchange. Not 100% on what needs to be done there, maybe nothing. (Hell, Ive seen a 95-97 with a "replacement taillight" from a 98+)

Sweet that is what i was hoping to hear. I just like the way the rear hatch looks on the 98+. I like the door handle better too.

I got my 98 Hatch today. So far..the plugs for the hatch are the same between the older style and the newer style, but the pinouts are different. Plus there is in wire for the license plate lamps. I plan on bringing that up from the rear bumper.

The rear window washer is also different. The 95-97 have a separate rear window washer, that is in the rear of the vehicle where the jack is, whereas the 98+ have it integrated into the wiper, and the hose for the fluid appears to run to the front of the vehicle. I will just run some more tubing to use the 98 washer with my existing pump/reservoir.

The rear lock cylinder is different between the two. It is integrated into the push button for the rear glass on the 98. Not sure what ill do there. I dont think ive ever used the key in the rear of mine. Can a key be made for the lock cylinder of the 98 hatch? Or can i have that cylinder matched to my keys?

The hardest part about this swap will actually be getting the hatch onto the explorer...those *****es are heavy.
