It's not done (when are they ever?). I still need to install the fog lights when they get here, paint the rear bumper and put in the deluxe center console to hold my CD changer. Oh, and eventually the DMV might get around to sending me my personalized plates! Then . . .

looks awesome :) when you say "paint the rear bumper", do you mean paint the chrome?

man, i cant wait to get my wheels put on - seeing your truck makes me want them on NOW! heh, one week from wednesday :)

I mean paint the chrome white and the grey parts black so that it matches the front.

I know what you mean about wanting your wheels NOW. When mine were being shipped to me I was checking UPS every day to see where they were.

Oh, I forgot to say it on my site, I'll have to add it later, I got my ART slotted rotors installed today. Much niceness!!

sweetness, that x is a similar setup to mine, but i like the rims a lot!

I'm going to leave the front bumper for now. Explorer Express was supposed to have a piece that went in the center between the two vertical thingys. The supplier didn't work out so they don't have any right now.

Once they get them again I'll put the center piece in and paint it white too.

espnfreak, I clicked on your link to check yours out and it didn't work. What up with that?

try it later sometimes the server goes down

it looks nice, and should look really good after you get the front and rear end finished. also you might want to get rid of the side molding, i really liked the improvement that made on my fairly similar x. and it was a fairly easy hour of work, plus it'll take 5 dollars and ten minutes to put it back on if you ever want to.

Thanks. I'd be interested to see what your X looks like. I tried the link in your sig line but couldn't get it to work.

I was thinking about getting the "step" running boards off of a newer X and painting 'em to match. Whadda you think?

go to my thread pics finally it should still be on the first page in the sport truck area. please give me some suggestions if you have any. i'll check right now and make sure the link still works

i think thats a great idea. i love nerf bars (step running boards.) they came stock on my truck and theyre painted grey to match, and they look sweet. scott, if you go to explorerunderground.com and go poking around in the pics section, theres a few guys with white sports that have nerf bars painted white - they look kickass.

Really nice looking X. That front end gives it a whole new look. I like it...
Will be finished with the rear painted. Although the painted nerf steps look good. There are some for sale on ebay now.

What next?

yetix-

looks great! did you install the ART rotors on your own? did you get them at the group buy price that was going on? i'm torn... can't decide if i want the ART rotors in the stock size or if i want to upgrade to a larger 13" rotor. what do you think?

also, how did you paint the chrome grille? i keep hearing that the chrome doesn't take paint very well, and the paint will eventually chip off...

Bill & Logan, thanks for the compliments.

Actually, what I was thinking about was more like this, painted to match of course:

Logan, I had the rotors installed for me. I could have done it myself but after everything else I've done I was too lazy to deal with bleeding the brakes too!

Dean gave me the group purchase price which was cool. Unfortunately, he sent me the wrong pads. Fortunately the shop where I had them installed carries Performance Friction and happened to have a set in stock.

The stock rotors give plenty of bite to me. I had warped one of my rotors a few months ago (4 guys and all of our climbing gear coming down from Mt. Whitney) so every time I stepped on the brakes my pedal vibrated big time! The new rotors really seem to work well and I tested them HARD this morning (rush hour idiots).

To paint the chrome I first used etching primer. It seems to work great. The only problem is that when it gets chipped from stones on the road silver shows through. Otherwise, no complaints for the four weeks that it's been painted.

Hey expo5.0,

your link works now and I want to know how you took those damn things off!! I hate those things but figured they were screwed on and I'd have holes if I removed them. How'd you do it?

you need -lots o goof off or another paint safe solvent and a hairdryer and a spatula.
I just heated one end of the thing as much as i could with the hair dryer then very carefully with the plastic spatula got the corner started to come up. don't worry about bending the moldings they are very flexible. then i just pulled it the rest of the way off the truck. this left a ugly, dirty, sticky mess which took about twelve soft cotton towels and a 20 oz bottle of goof off to remove. but it worked out perfectly. the only problem i had was that my truck had been repainted by some screw up who didn't remove the molding to repaint it. so there was a line of new paint that was higher than the paint underneath the molding. so i fixed that by adding the flames which are now on my truck. if you have any questions just post em here i'll check back.

I know what I'm doing this weekend!!

Where can I find "Goof Off" and what is it?

Thanks,

Yeti, what preparations/steps did you use to paint the chrome on your bumpers? I want to paint mine, but I don't wanna screw them up.

1. Remove the grille
2. Sand it lightly with 220 grit sandpaper just enough to rough it up but NOT scratch it
3. Wipe down with a wet rag and let it fry
4. Wipe it down with a rag soaked in alcohol and let it dry
5. Spray with 2-3 coats of etching primer per instructions on can
6. Spray with 3-4 coats of color matched paint per instructions
7. Spray with 2-3 coats of clear-coat (if applicable)
8. Let that beeotch dry and then put it back on yer X.

Simple. I did mine four weeks ago and other than stone chips it's holding up fine with no lifting or flaking.
