Platinum or not?

I didn't know that sparkplugs went in the coil pack. I guess you learn something new on here every day :)

obviously there is a plug wire from your coil to your spark plug...i guess you do learn something everyday now...

Ominous Racing......so your saying that YOU know more about DIS, than Ford Engineers?

Wow. We should all be blessed that you chose to come to our little website, and grace us with your knowledge.

I think what Al was talking about was, how does the coil even know it's a copper, irridium, or platinum plug? Answer: IT DOESN'T. The coil's only job is to produce enough electrical current to jump a gap in a spark plug. It makes no difference to the coil if the metal is copper, irridium, platinum, steel, brass, nickel, aluminum, gold, silver, or bronze.....the problem you are talking about, 'carbon tracking' is NOT indicitive of the type of plug being used.

alright guys check this out...the explorers (91-94 at least) use a distributor-less coil so you have to run platinums or ull f*ck up your coil pack...double platinums have dual electrodes so the spark runs through the quickest electrode...so its up to you if u wanna run regular plat's or double, simple as that...that should clear up any confusion on the topic....

for the fact of the matter the first gen explorers do not call for platinums. however the same years of astro van do. they have the same engine, same transmissions, in some cases the same transfer case. why do they call for them you ask? because it is cheaper to do a tune up on those onces every 5 years instead of once every 2 to 3 years....because there is a bit of labor involved with changing plugs on those.

I never heard of this phenomenon of 'Carbon Track your coil'.
Coil pack shoots voltage thru the wires and the Plugs arcs as the quickest path to ground.
I have never read a proactive notice anywhere stating that Carbon plugs will void the cars warranty because of damage to the Coil Pack. Sorry, I don't buy it.

P.S. I have 260K miles on my original Coil Pack and I use Regular Autolites.

My local mechanic changed 'em in our 93 for 25 bux labor. I still don't know how!!
(edit, yes i knew you meant to say aerostar)

Anyway, I use standard autolites, change them often anyway because I want to. ( I like to read and change them)
I use MSD coil packs, but switched to my stock ones, drove 10 miles, switced them back.
The msd coils make a big difference. But my truck didn't die.

btw...speaking of all these issues.....Was there EVER an Aluminum Head offered as OE in an Explorer? Or were they all Cast iron?
Ryan

I don't know...I'd like to know, too. I want to learn something every day. ;)
