hi we have resently purchased a 96 awd 5.0 efi with i belive gt 40 intake. we have had it a couple months now and new yrs eve we belive we ran out of fuel even tho we had ran the gauge further befor, it was kinda of odd we were sitting n our truck over lookin the river (truck not running) when my lap top started to get all crazy(it was hooked up to my head unit via head phone jack to play misic.) we then just turned off our truck for a while when we desided to leave the truck wouldnt start after 3hr wait a friend rescued us with 2 gallons of fuel. the truck started just fine we drove to the nearest fuel station and put gas in. on our short ride home from there the truck started to act funny no eceleration wanting to die falls on its face if u dont fether or manuipulat the pedal. then the next time we went to get fuel when we would start pumping gas the stations pumps would shut down and display an error code on there displays this being two at different stations i have replaced the fuel filter, gas cap, fuel pressure sensor, cleaned idel air controll valve. no help symptoms just kep getting worse to the point it will only run eithier the fuel cap off and some time i have to remove the mass air flow to get it to run and some times i dont. i have opened the schrader valve and it dosent seem to have the psi it requiers most times but some times it will shoot out and hit the hood but looks like it is full of air bubbles to me so i desided to check the injectors too off the upper intake and number 8 port was clean unlike the rest so i replaced it runs slightly better now like with fuel cap on and maf on but still no power. and now the ignition dosent work at all even after i replaced with new key and switch will only start with the remote stater and have to shut truck off by taking off the throttel position sensor. i can drive down the road with out a key even in the ignition im at a loss please help. should i try a new fuel pump?

May be the fuel pump. check the fuel pressure when its doing this if possible but it sounded just like mine when it needed one. My dads as well.

What the Hell do the STATIONS fuel pumps have to do with this? Sorry, but this sounds like someone has more time on their hands than they know what to do with.

Running the tank below 1/8 tank, then filling with cold fuel is the best way to kill your fuel pump.

Replace the pump and you will be good to go.

I highly suggest either taking it to somebody, or cutting a hole in the floor, there is a thread about it. dropping the tank is not fun in the least bit, I had to do it, and I will never do it again.

I dropped my tank. My issue was getting the fuel lines off with the special tools. I had done my fuel filter, but I just couldn't get these lines off. I'm not sure if I would have had better luck with the hole trick.

Anyway, I was able to just squeek the fuel pump assy out of the truck with the tank down, and the fuel lines attached. Replaced pump, and reassemble.

Fuel pumps do go south once in a while.

And yes, the symptoms you have are exactly like a fuel pump on its way out. We all agree here.

Trust me you are not the only one, It took me about 45 minutes to get the lines off the pump....

it took me 20 minutes to do my pump.......

and i will agree with Turdle its not good to run your tank low then filling it. Specially after a long drive.
