Problems buying Explorer tires

Hummer or nothing is my guess.

you have got to be kidding me.....America is losing it!

What ever happened to taking responsibility for your own actions. If you want to buy 38
" tires for your stock Ex be my guest, its not my problem if you roll it because you blew one at 80......geeze....

If I had a tire shop I would want to sell tires. Installing unsafe tires is another issue I guess, but its my tire shop, I'll be the judge of whats safe and not safe.

Putting those rinky dink stick out 14" tires on a Honda looks more dangerous to me then running 32's on a stock Ex......

I work at a tire shop myself, and the policy there is that we aren't allowed to put on any tire that isn't specified by the Manufactuer, that means no oversized tires,
The correct size or optional sizes are listed in Tire Books, or you can just look at the sticker on the doorjam of your vehicle, one way to get around this is just to bring the rims in separated then you can put whatever ####ing size you want on the rims, then we don't have anything to do with the safety of the customer because he himself is installing the rims onto the vehicle.

and i was reading in my Explorer Manual the other day, and it says that only A/T tires are supposed to be installed on this vehicle, that means no M/Ts or H/Ts and whatnot, but I always see Explorers running around without A/Ts but i plan to keep A/T/s on my vehicle

I know some shops that installed oversized tires have waivers that the customer's sign so that the customers are liable instead of the tire dealer

kaufman tire doesnst care :D

Ordered 255/70/R15's from TireRack and said they were for a '98 Durango with stock 235/75/r15's with no problem then had Firestone mount them. Not being honest sucks but its the only way to get larger tires from anybody.

Just for fun, I called The Tire Rack and they confirmed that they cannot sell tires for an Explorer except for what Ford recommends. This is due to liability and the Firestone tire issue.

But, if you're interested in 31" tires, use a '94 Toyota 4Runner 4WD. They came with 31x10.5 - 15 tires as an option.

Just an idea - Dave.

What does a tire shop generally charge for mounting/balancing tires if you bring in the tires and rims?

Oh yeah, got my 31s at BigO. They didn't want to put them on at first, but they said it was because they would rub. I asked them to put them on and see what happens, if they rub we could go down to the 30s. They didn't rub, so they were happy....

They guy said he was happy to do it, because others have asked and they've been saying they wouldn't do it... now they would at least try.

do they rub when your suspension flexes?

do they rub when your suspension flexes?

Haven't flexed it yet... But my guess would be yes, there isn't a ton of room in there and the only rub i've gotten so far is taking a full U turn a little fast.

I've posted this in a few other theads, but I think the more the merrier (sp?).

if you go to a discount tire store and they refuse to install/sell tires to you that would fit...

Call their corporate office... @ 888-774-6560 and ask them what their policy is on installing tires on a Ford explorer.. then tell them that a store (get the name of the manager and the phone number/address of the store) and give it to them..

So far, I've gotten 2 different managers in trouble for doing that (saying they won't install).. Last time I had to call (about 9 months ago) the policy according to the corporate office was to install any tire that would fit and would seem safe.. e.g.. our '92 X with a 4" lift will fit 32" tires.. so 32 get installed... now if I wasn't lifted, they would go.. or trying to put passenger car tires on the X would go (can't handle the weight)... etc..

Also, each time I have called, I mentioned I wanted to get the corporate policy before I posted a message on the largest explorer message board saying not to go to them to buy tires..
