But that stuff is over $3 a gallon......

Do a propane/natural gas conversion.

Some questions you gotta ask yourself in this.

Is it going to be cost effective for just fuel savings?

Do I really have the expertise to swap a drivetrain and fab up tons of brackets and mounts?

Do I have the TIME to do this propperly?

Diesel is a few cents more expensive then gas where I live.

I think what he's saying is to make the Diesel himeself. You can make a clean running diesel out of old vegetable oil for about 60 cents a gallon. It performs the same as reg diesel, and even burns cleaner. I have a buddy who works at a ford dealership here and they have a customer who makes his own. (He actually produces it in the bed of his truck and pipes it straight into his tank. Explosion waiting to happen, I know.

Anyway, this guy has a contract w/ Mcdonalds to take all their oil cooking oil. After 5 stage filtration and conversion to diesel, it comes up to about 30 cents a gallon for him. Theres a company who sells a kit like this for about 300 bucks. It comes with mixing tubs, all the tubes and directions you need, as well as enough chemicals to make a 55 gal batch of diesel.

You'd be better off selling the Explorer (gasp, I know) and buying a Diesel 150 than to convert your unleaded engine.

A diesel 150? where do you find one? If you have seen them LMK where, I would love one but dont think they exhist in the US

Swapping in a diesel would take alot of time and money. There aren't to many options out there as far as a cheap/easy to find motor that will fit. A motor from an old diesel ranger would fit but you'll have a hard time finding one of them. You could also try a cummins 4bt which came in various box trucks but they're huge and weigh about 1k lbs. If you have money to burn I'd say your best bet would be a 4cyl diesel out of a liberty. However you'll need the transmission, t-case, all engine wiring, fuel pumps, etc. I think t'he amount of money you'd save by making your own diesel wouldn't justify the cost of swapping in a diesel. I don't know about any biodiesel kits for 300 bucks the few i have seen have cost alot more than that.. There are directions out there for building your own biodiesel processor and you may be able to throw one together for 300 but i doubt it.

Sorry, typo. The 1 and 2 are extremely close to each other. :)

Maybe Ford would sell you one if you asked? I don't see why not. The new 150 has plenty of room for one.

There is not as much room as you think.. My 7.3 is shoehorned into my Super Duty, the engine extends back underneath the cowl a good foot.

I have this ideal but everybody thinks it's impossible (same thing they said about a 302 in a explore/ranger) I'm going to do this swapp I will post the info when I get it done... if I can build my stock car then this will be a breaze I have almost decide on a turbo 4cyc isuzu motor tranny combo I belive a explorer with a non turbo would be a slow on take off (like the old mercedes)... start looking around it not that hard just got to remember a diesel has to have a fuel shut off in stead of a on/off switch like a gasser (no spark plugs and coil):):)

I never said its impossible. In fact I think is quite possible. I just dont really see it as worth it. 302 swaps are cheap and easy. This is something entirely different. Yes it can be done, good luck on it and keep us posted.

money and time are the only things stopping you from putting a turbine jet engine in your truck, everyone here knows anything is possible. I have seen big block V8's showhorned into Gen I rangers

Turbo diesel is very possible, especially since Ford builds Diesel Rangers, however the amount of time and $$$$ its going to take = makes it not worth it.

Next year I believe you will be able to buy one in the states, Jeep has a diesel liberty coming out as well.

Whoever told you the 5.0L conversion into a ranger is not possible has been living on another planet since the Ford Courier came out in 1978 or whenever it was.....guys have been putting the 289 and 302 into everything from golf carts to S-10's since the small block was built by Ford....

correct and when they all started this back then the same thing was said "why" or it will cost you "$$$" but look at it now the kits are a dime a dozen and fairly cheap once somebody figures out the cheap/easiest/ avalible turbo deisel route then they will be cheap to... just like when my father in law installed a 429 in his f-350 4x4 4speed ford told him there was no way to do it a 400 was the biggest engine he could put in his truck he did it that was 1979 he made his own motor mounts and figured out and the necassery part to do it now they sell a kit for it... things that make you go hmmmmm

Biggest problem = fuel delivery system.
Custom fuel cell or tank, going from gasoline to diesel is a WHOLE LOT different then showhorning in a big block carbed or even EFI V8.

5.0L conversions are NOT CHEAP. Kits are NOT a dime a dozen, and every one is different.....ask me how I know if you would like :)

we do alot of them down here they are pretty cheap (carbed model not efi like yours) last one was a 84 ranger made it where the guy even kept his air conditioning...we have lots of sources to
get the oil filter relocators and such.. last one that was really fun was a 460 ranger with a blower and 2 4 barrels .... now you got remember where I live at most people have 2or 3 "parts car" laying around

Carbed is def cheaper, but not in the long run with gas mileage :)
EFI is SOOOO superior :) and now DIS too

Air conditioning is easy, a couple hoses and your done.
the 5.0L is a natural fit.

I know going out on a winter morning hit the key and they start right up and purr ohhhh so sweet unlike my old truck pump it twice and start it and make sure it don't die:):)
